If someone is breeding copious litters of puppies and not always registering ALL the pups with the KC...?

Who checks on the welfare of these animals? Who ensures their most basic requirements are met?

Have a sinking feeling we live in a county where the Local Authority doesn't...The Kennel Club wouldn't know...and the RSPCA........?????????

Particularly distresssing when your own chosen breed is just one of the many breeds involved.

Even if they were registered with the Kennel Club this does not give assurance that even basic health checks have been done.  It records those that have, but not everyone prepares well, or gives due consideration to health, before planning a litter.

The basic welfare of the pups is something we must check for ourselves as purchasers.

Depending on the number of litters bred, it is up to the Local Authority.  If someone breeds more than 4 litters in a year - wether they are registered  with the KC or not - then they need to apply to the Local Authority for a breeders licence.  this involves meeting rudimentary care standards, not breeding from the same bitch twice in a year, and having an annual inspection.,   If yhou think someone is breeding more than 4 litters and is not licenced, then contact the local authority Enviromental Health Dept.

And here I would say is where things fal l down.  No point in making more and more laws when the existing ones aren't properly implemented.

anyone who knows of any breeder whose dogs are in poor conditions should report them to the LA and ensure that steps are taken for them to be inspected and Licneses revoked, be prosecutred for operating without one etc.
