I have 2 bitches mother and daughter that have been together constantly since the day the young 1 was born. They are devoted to each other and get on much better than I ever expected.
The mother Keatah is having pups the youngest Star is almost 2 and half. We are taking mum to be scanned today where my eldest duaghter will be giving the other 1 lots of fuss.
Problem is whats the best way to go about things when Keatah is ready for having pups. There are 5 of us at home my 3 children being 17, 13 and 9 so she will get plenty of fuss. But we dont seem to replace her mum. She looks up to her so much. If Keatah sleeps Star does, IF keatah doesnt want to eat Star wont, if Keatah wants to play they play. She even goes to the loo at same time.
I know its not possible to house them together close to the time.
Any suggestions.

I can only tell you what happened when I had the same situation (my younger bitch was also 2 and 1/2). Mum was fine with her daughter right up to going into labour, obviously they were separated whilst she had her babies, and she stayed exclusively with them for 3 days.  After this, mum asked to come and see her daughter and started to spend small amounts of time with her. After a week we thought that mum may let her daughter see the pups, so we took her in on her lead and mum was quite happy with her daughter at a distance - she made it clear at first just how close she could come. After a very short time when curiosity was satisfied we let her in without a lead, and she would lie and watch the puppies, not attempting to get too close. Obviously her mother never considered her the threat she seemed to think our male dog was - she would not let him any where near her babies until they were about 4 weeks old, and even then would guard them. By the time the pups were 3 weeks, mum was happy to let the other bitch wash them and play with them but still supervised to make sure her daughter didnt get too heavy handed in play, and by the time they went to their new homes, they had two mothers to say goodbye to! Obviously it may vary with your two, but if you follow mothers lead and make sure the daughter has lots of human company, I'm sure they will be fine! :D  

What a lovely story.

We had a GSD bitch & her daughter, when the mother had her second litter(all three of them) she totally rejected them & had to be made to feed them. She allowed her daughter who had never had a litter to top & tail them & whilst she laid on the bed(the puppies were in the bedroom in a wheliping box)Not usual in domestic dogs but not unsual in wild dogs I believe that the mother just couldn't be bothered with the litter for some reason, They were weaned early & never had any set backs. In her final litter she had one puppy & again allowed her daughter to t & t them but was more willing to feel the solo puppy

The daughter who was very laid back allowed mum to look at the puppies(she only did this once & never showed any more interest)as well as the cat !
