Topic Dog Boards / Health / Isolation for kennel cough - how long?

Luke has now been on antibiotics for a week, having had a slight cough for about a week before. His mum is fine, not a sign of a cough. When can they go back to training classes? It does seem a shame that she should miss out, the vet thought she's probably immune. However I don't want to pass on any infection to other dogs. I did ask the vet but he was extremely vague!

I brought kennel cough back from a show a couple of weeks ago.  My vet says 7 days after the last cough or snuffle they are clear.  But I always wait much longer than that before I show the affected one again.

I've just phoned someone from the training class and she said leave it till after Christmas....boo hoo...:( :( :(

I always reckon 3 weeks after the cough finishes. Better safe than spreading it around.

There was a guy next door to where we were working who had a boxer with kennel cough. He was walking him :( :( Did say he should be in isolation, but he said he was making sure he would not come into contact with other dogs  Did try and persuade him that he shouldnt have the dog out but wasnt having any of it.
Needless to say I stripped off and put my clothes straight in the wash as soon as I got hom before I even went anywhere near my dogs!!!
Lea :)

I gather the newer vaccines for kennel cough now last for a year - is this correct? I feel after this experience it is worth considering even if the dogs don't ever go to kennels. I realise it's not clear cut as kennel cough can be caused by different viruses & bacteria, but would a higher uptake of the vaccine result in less infection going around in the doggy community?

i now give my dogs all 6 of them kennel cough homoeopath tablet after lost 6 puppies out of 9 two years ago with kc i am not taking that risk again,
i have just heard this week that there kc around so they have been put on the tablet this week,
the other thing about the injection it will only cover different type of kc bit like the flu jab,it the viruses that cause the kc but it can into a batcteria problem, like chast injection, mengitis, fits, ect, and the thing you can give then is antibotics,
kc rises it when the weather is mild and damp just like we have had the last 3 months,so after losting the litter in oct 2002 i will never breed or have litter in from sep to jan, beacuse of this viruse ,
this time of year you see alot on kids go down with croup which is an inflammantion of the repiratory passages with laboured breathing and hoarse coughing abit like kc.
