Hi,

Can anyone help??
Is it true that if you own a Bulldog then you should find a vet that is a specialist in the breed? Or will a normal well qualified vet do just as well?
As you can probably tell im new to the breed, and i've not long had my puppy, and on top of that i've just moved to the Wirral where i don't know any vets!!!
Help! So if anyone knows a vet who knows everything about Bulldogs or anyone who can recommend a good vet in the Wirral area then please let me know!!
Thanks.

Could you not ask your pups breeder? I'm sure they would know. Sorry I can't be more help. :-)

With some breeds it is a good idea if your vet has good knowledge of the breed.
For eg some vets can claim that an undershot mouth in a Boxer is incorrect etc.
Which anyone that knows the breed knows that it is perfectly normal and correct to have
an undershot mouth!
I prefer to use a vet which knows my breed & knows what quirks etc they have.
Less likely to come out with oh well these are prone to....and then list loads which
they aren't prone to etc

It might be a good idea to contact your local Bulldog breed club in that area and they
may be able to reccommend a vet to you.
Failing that they might be able to give you contacts of a local breeder who will be able to
reccommend a vet to you.

Kind Regards
Kirstine

I think she expressed some very valid concerns about the way the bulldog is heading due to *some* breeders (please note I said *some* not all :-) )

I have seen quite a few old tyme giant bulldogs and they are IMO much better, healthier specimens of the breed, much nicer looking and more like the bulldogs of old depicted in various old paintings/pictures of fighting and bull baiting dogs.

If a breed becomes a caricature of its former self, and no longer capable of doing the job it was bred for, then breeders need to take a serious look at their breeding programme and consider changing it to one which benefits the breed. :-)

It is nice to use a vet that knows your breed
there is a list of vets used by other bulldog owners
on bulldog rescue site

I think as well, it is important to feel able to speak up if things are not right. There was a case a while ago of a young bulldog pup who was muzzled tighty by a vet and although the owner said the dog was distresssed, the vet more or less poo poohed that and said something to the effect of "that'll teach it not to play up". Next thing, the pup was dead :(
