I have a 5 yr old boxer....He started having problems with a "brown thick wax" substance in his ears. I took him to my vet and he said it was just wax build up and not ear mites so he gave me some cleaner and told me to clean them often. This went on for approx 4 weeks with NO luck. Then he started with the constant scratching that woud cause his ears to bleed and would cry like he was in pain. So again we took another trip to the vet and still received the same prognosis and we were sent home with a different product to clean his ears. A few weeks later I noticed that he was developing this same "waxy brown substance" inbetween his toes, so I decided to try a different vet. The second vet said it was probably due to a food allergy, so I did the expensive hypoallergenic dog foods for 4 months with no change. Then I tried the RAW diet for 5 months and that didn't work either. The vet suggested that I have him allergy tested but I don't have the $600, because of all the vet bills i've accumulated over the past several months. If anyone out there has had this same problem, PLEASE let me know what your dog might have been allergic to or something that might have helped you.
thanks

Hi Scooby, Maddie had the same kind of problem, very large build up of wax which ordinary daily cleaning didn't work, the vet said it could be a yeast infection (he also checked her feet but they were ok she only had this for a week before I took her in), anyway he prescribed 'Aurizon' ear drop suspension which I applied for 7 days and it cleared it up a treat.
That was in september and, touch wood, it hasn't returned.

Thanks for the information Dee, I have tried medications that were suspose help with yeast problems in their ears already with NO luck. I'll list a FEW of the ones i've tried.....
Zymox Enzymatic Solution (with hydrocortisone)-----aids in the treatment of acute and chronic otitis externa due to bacterial and yeast infections.
VET BETA-GEN SOLUTION-----gentamicin sulfate with betamethasone valerate.
Animax Ointment-----Nystatin-neomycin sulfate-thiostrepton-triamcinolone acetonice ointment
He has also taken antibotics (Cephalexin) and Prednisone. I only gave the prednisone for 3 days because it started to cause complications with his kidneys (he constantly drank and the water went straight threw him)
I did some reading on things that other people on this site have used, one in particular was called Thornit Powder but I never could get a price in american money or a website that would ship to the U.S.

Hi Scooby
My Gordon had this problem too. We did allergy test and it came back that she had a few different allergies. I have always used Thornit in the past, but it didn't clear up the ear problems while we didn't know what she was allergic too. She still gets very waxy ears even though we are very careful of what we feed her, so we use Thornit as part of her grooming health/maintenance. Her ears have never been as clean. anyway I can't do links, but this company says that they will send to America. www.championpets.co.uk

Hello scooby.
Some vets say that thornit ear powder is not a licensed medicine. But most people (including myself) who used it know that it truly works. I have five cocker spaniels and they have no ear problems now.
I assume that you live in the state. I know an online shop in U.K which would ship to U.S. you can buy things with your credit card, I guess.
Please visit http://championpetsonline.co.uk
I would love to hear from you how it works with your dog.

Have you tried "Canaural" ? It is in form of drops and lists each g as containing the following:-
Diethanolamine fusidate BPC 5mg
Framycetin sulphate 5mg
Nystatin PH.Eur. 100,000 Units
Prednisolone PH.Eur. 2.5 mg
Cleared up a very itchy, inflamed and badly scratched ear very quickly (cause undetermined but neither mites nor wax build up).
Teri ;)
Boxers can have a yeast build up which can cause the gunky ears.
One of my Boxers occasionally suffers with waxy build up in her ears and my vet has prescribed
Canural (not sure that I've spelt it correctly?). It's like an antibiotic ear drop which helps with infection etc.
I feed my Boxers on a gluten free complete diet, I tend to use Nutro, Arden Grange or Purina Pro Plan.
I tend to clean my dogs ears out with the baby wipes and they don't really have bad ears,
Hopefully you will find something that will help your Boxer soon :)

Has your dog been examined under anaesthetic? One of my dogs had recurrent ear problems, every type of medication was tried and nothing worked, he ended up on steroids for months because of the inflamation. It cost us a small fortune over the years :( Then when he was 10 he had to go in to have his teeth cleaned and I asked the vet to examine his ears while he was under (They wanted to resect his ear/neck to allow drainage

) and what did they find?? a POLYP, long stalked, growing right from the bottom of the ear canal  I'd argued that I thought it was this for years!!!! - easily removed with a long-nosed snipper and he never had an ear problem again ;)
Not saying that's what your dog has, but food for thought ;)

The problem I have is that the wax also appears inbetween his toes and the underneath of his feet....I've also noticed that it has started to develop inside is navel.....I wish I had the money to have him allergy tested but I've spent so much money on vet bills already and I'm still paying on some.....I'm just so confused with this whole situation and nothing seems to help him. The only thing I could think of is that he is allergic to something he is walking on and through scratching he spreads it to other areas like his ears. But I've even gone through great lengths to change household cleaners i normally use and switched to the hypoallergenic stuff and i bought a steamer type vaccum to "sanitize" the furniture and his bed versus spray cleaners. When he goes outside to potty I even tried washing his feet with soap and water before letting him back inside thinking that would help, but it didn't.
Dear Scooby,
I strongly recommend Thornit Ear Powder for your dog. I've never heard of any side-effects resulting from use of the powder. and I've seen many many dogs who got benefit of it. even dogs which vets said they should cut their ear off.
It is worth a try.
