hi i had my bitch mated on two occasions she was willing to stand the stud got to work on her but on both occasions failed to tie, what are the chances of this being successful as i thought they had to tie to become pregnant, or could these have been slip matings, the stud has been proven so no problem with him, i wonder as to why they didnt tie, he seemed to be doing the job properly, can the male still ejaculate inside the bitch without the tie ? sorry to sound a bit graphic, its just im confused to how the proccess goes, is it the bitch who clamps onto the dog ,does he swell? if anyone can offer some advice on this to put me right, id be very grateful thanks

Well give me another week or so and hopefully I will know myself as I didn't get a tie with my bitch, and keeping fingers crossed.  the tie is a combination of the dogs gland swelling and the bitch spasming and causing a tie.

The dog usually ejaculates in the first couple of minutes while thrusting before the tie.  During the tie it is mostly prostatic fluid that is ejaculated so a pregnancy may result from a slip mating.  The difficulty is knowing if there was ejaculation, whereas with a toe you know that it has already occured.

When semen is collected from a dog the dog does not start to try to turn until he has already ejaculatd, and the vet may or may not collect the prostatic fraction depending on what the sample is needed for.
