Topic Dog Boards / General / Am I paying too much?

I have had an insurance renewal for my Cocker (KC Registered) and it has gone up to £69.30 a month.  I have claimed only once on it and this was about 4 months ago when she started vomiting immediately after eating and couldn't keep any water down.  She was fine in herself when she wasn't vomiting bit realised that as she couldn't keep water down we'd get her checked out.  It turned out she had swallowed a stone and after a lengthy operation and 3 days in the Vets she came back to us rather swollen and and a bit sore, but oherwise fine.  The bill came to £1200 and we put in the claim (the only one we have ever made).  We were given the money back very promptly but they have now decided that due to the claim her premium must go up.  Do you think this is right?  She will not suffer from the problem now because the stone has been removed with no lasting damage.

We do live in central London and Maud is 6 years old (other reasons cited for the increase) but we pay less for our car insurance.  Our other dog Lily has never had a claim at 5 years old and her fee is £40 a month.

Before hunting out any better rates I just wondered what any of your thoughts were?  Am I being stingy or is this the norm once you have made a claim?  Her excess by the way is £100.

Thanks.

What insurance co are you with.
My dog has eye problems and over the year we have claimed over £3000 for his treatment, our insurance co has always paid up, we have just received our new policy and it has not gone up apart from £5 inflation which is acceptable.

ditto archer!! Wow, mine's £10.70 for the pedigree and just under £11.50 for the cross, although the £10.70 is due to go up a couple of £ in Jan. They're both covered for £6000 a year. Admittedly I don't live in London, but I'm not classified as the 'sticks'.

p.s excess £40 for the cross and £70 for the other

It may pay for you to shop around and just see how much it would cost to insure your dog with others, you never know, it *may* be cheaper elsewhere but you would need to make sure they know about your previous claim as well as check exactly what they WILL cover you for :)

So they are expecting you to pay over £100 a month to insure the pair of them?

Why not put that money into a seperate bank account (that you DO NOT touch) monthly, and therefore will have a large amount saved for an emergency, and also you then get the interest too??

I would definitely say shop around IMO thats extorsion (sp).  I dont pay that much to insure the house.

Hi

My insurance has just gone up by £2.75 which is fantastic as in the first year alone we have had over £4500 paid out on our girl. Definately shop around we also dont pay that much to protect the house.

Our insurance is with saga its 22.50 a month for two dogs they pay out on the dot and are brilliant.
I think  you need to change.
Whats the point of insurance that hikes up the premium if you claim thats what insurance is for !

I have rescue cockers, many with dental problems and I don't insure my dogs.

I work it out on a 'my life' basis.  I will always have dogs and will save £000's by not having insurance.  However, I have a large dog fund which is money saved that I will not touch for any other reason.

If you can afford to take the sting of an vets expensive treatment when you have just started 'dog' saving, I really would recommend that everyone 'self insure' for vet bills.

The main thing I would worry about as regards not having insurance would be my 3rd party coverage-currently at £3million per dog.  I know I could afford to cover any unforeseen vet bills, but if god forbid something terrible should happen and I faced a huge compensation bill, then I know I would be grateful for paying my insurance each month!
