I just heard earlier on that the Kennel club have at long last decided to split the Akitas into two seperate breeds, the Akita-inu,and the Great Japanese dog.
I'ts been a while in coming, but common sense has eventually prevailed, these two breeds are should have been split a long time ago as they are nothing like each other.

Hi Billybob

Just a thought - can you get both varieties in the same litter and if so will the kennel club allow cross registration ? - I have BSD's and a while back the breed was amalgamated with all four varieties lumped together and intervariety mating allowed between Tervueren/Groenendael and Tervueren/Malinois. After a few years the KC  separated the varieties out again BUT we very often still have litters of mixed varieties - they have allowed us 5 years cross registration (which runs out in a couple of years time). However because selected intervariety matings are still done on the continent and most of the lines here are continental we have many mixed litters still being born ! ( I had a grey Terv in my last Groenendael litter). This is going to be a huge headache for our breed and I suspect for yours for decades to come. What's the state of play elsewhere in the world ? - are both types of Akita inter-mated or are they kept separate- is the stock in this country heavily dependent on lines from other countries ? ( I suspect that it is being a relatively small gene pool here). Your breed clubs need to make sure that the Kennel Club will allow cross registration according to type for a LONG while ahead. Good lucjk and I will watch the progress of your breed with interest ( what variety do you have by the way ?)

Would be interested to know where you heard that Billy Bob. Trevor, the situation in Akitas is completely different to that in BSDs. They would not be varieties of the same breed but completely different breeds. Generally speaking 1st crosses between the 2 types are not successful  because the resulting pups are "tweenies" neither one type nor the other

Strange..........seen as there really isn't many 'Japanese types' in this country the classes will be small for them & huge for the other.
FCI seperated the 2 breeds as i know in Ireland they are classed seperately.
Its like the Parson Russell this though, the KC opened the register to allow JRT's to be registered as Parsons now people in Australia & Europe have JRT's that have Parson Russell ancestory so would these dogs be as mongrels? as the 2 breeds are recognized seperately world wide just not here in England or USA.

Its like putting the smooth & wire fox terriers into the same registry & class.
