I have a 1yr old staffie who does'nt put on any weight. Is there anything I can feed her?
We found that lamb and tripe are two of the best foods for putting wight onto a dog but obviously it is done in moderation and you also run the risk of making the dog a fussy eater if you feed them certain foods. Her breeding may also have an effect on how she will look in terms of build / weight and how she matures so you may be best of going back to the breder and finding out if this is a family trait or just a one off.

Is your dog lean and fit or skinny. If shes lean then you shouldn't be trying to put weight on her...it will come with age and maturity. If shes skinny then I would also try tripe and lamb but these are not a complete diet so shouls be fed along side her normal diet or maybe you could consider feeding a raw diet?I feed BARF and my 2 year old elkie has changed beyond all recognition

I feed a mixture of any meat I can get my hands on including tripe, breast of lamb, chicken wings and carcasses, pigs trotters, beef, pork ribs etc along with veg and offal.I also feed the odd raw egg.
I have a 2 year old elkhound who although was not underweight was always in need of more body ....his breeders saw him for the first time a couple of months ago since his diet change and were both really impressed by the change in him.I have also got to say that they no longer have wind, the waste they produce is now minimal and they seem 'calmer'.
Adding to that I now spend a fraction of the cost on feed compared to what I did before...so happy bunnies all round

Hello Sonia
At 1 year old you can still be giving her 2 meals a day.
I would suggest her complete meal with scrambled egg and cheese mixed in for her first meal then tripe - or other meat - mixed with pasta for her next meal.
If this manages to increase her weight then slowly reduce the "added" foods and increase her complete - if you are choosing to feed soley complete. At 1 year old she does still need to be on a good complete food and it should ideally be a "Junior" mix.
Silly question but is she up to date on her wormers?

I disagree...sorry but why does a dog NEED a complete food.My elkie pup was weaned on raw and has never had anything else but raw.

Sorry to hijack this post :) But i have asked my butcher about lamb breast and he has never heard of it,he thinks the closest thing to it is lamb flaps, they look like thinish squares of fatty meat, sometimes they have the rib bones under them.If we are talking about the same thing then lamb breast would definately put weight on your dog as well as tripe, unfortunately my dogs wont eat green tripe!

Your butcher doesn't sound vrey knowedgeable about meat!

The correct culinary term for 'lamb flaps' is 'breast of lamb'. There are umpteen recipes for it if you google.

Misunderstanding I think Archer. I did not mean a dog NEEDS to be on complete food. I said if you are choosing to feed a complete food - everyone is entitled to their own choice - then it should be a junior mix of a good quality. I feed both complete and meat/pasta but some may prefer just complete. Hope this clarifies what was meant :-)
