Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / how many times should they lock????
- By Jay [gb] Date 20.11.04 12:09 UTC
Hello

I have mated my weimaraner although they have only locked the once for 20 mins and after reading a few posts on this forum it sounds like they should lock twice.

Anybody have any more information on this?

I am very curious as to if she locks twice does that mean more puppies or does this mean a 100% pregnancy rather than 50/50?

Look forward to your replies

My girl had a mating with one 50 minute tie, she got pregnant!  Last year, she had again just a one 20 minute tie and ended up with 7 pups.  One of my other girls had two 30 minute ties and she also had 7 pups, so I don't think that it necessairly means the more ties the more pups, it's just a safeguard if you're not sure of dates

It doesn't amtter how many times they mate or tie or for how long. The bitch produces 'x' amount of eggs and they are fetilised producing 'x' amount of puppies. One tiny drop of semen contains thousands of  sperm. The purpose of repeat matings is to ensure the timing is right...not to increase numbers of puppies
Also 20 ties would not mean 100% pregnancy.

I always thought they only locked when they are ready to mate I have read the 'Book of the Bitch' and many others which are great but I am still really unsure.

She locked on her 13th day and it was both dogs first time so I suppose its a case of lets wait and se

Thanks for replies and fingers crossed

what about those "mixed" litters then, which MUST have been sired by different dogs, due to the colours of the puppies?

Not all the eggs are released on the same day. This is why it's important to get the timing right, and keep the bitch in purdah again after mating!

What is Purdah??

Isolation. It comes from the Urdu word meaning 'curtain', behind which women had to remain out of sight of strangers, especially men.

Michelled
a bitch only has so many eggs to fertilise. Sperm can live for 2-3 days inside the bitch therefore if dog 'A' mated the bitch on one day and then dog 'B' mated her a day or so later and the eggs were then ready for fertilisation both lots of sperm would still be viable and it would be pot luck as to which sperm fetilised the eggs...but this would stiill not influence the quantity of pups born.
It always makes me smile when studs are advertised and it says...has sired 'x' amount of LARGE litters...this is NOTHING  to do with the sire...the qualnity is down to the bitch alone!

So when do you think I will know if she is pregnant or not?

I have read it will be around her 6 week mark as she wil start to show then and I can also go to the vets at this time for xray.

Is there no other earlier signs?

Thanks for all your replies by the way

A lot of bitches become more clingy and 'loving' ,others show no sign at all. Some bitches show changes in shape from about 4-5 weeks others nothing till a few days before...each is different.
Most people prefer to scan rather than xray....but even this has been proved to be incorrect and bitches that have been scanned as 'empty' have gone on to produce live litters and vice versa(due to absorbtion) so the only sure way is to wait and see!
Good luck

I can usually tell around 3 weeks, then at 4 weeks I start having doubts, then suddenly at 5 weeks my girls seem to grow overnight!  Other than the signs already mentioned more clingy, loving, mine start to get fussy with food around 3-4 weeks

Hi Jay
I have mated both my beardies when the first one (who only had 1 mating) got to 4 weeks i thought she was having pups but then a couple of days later i had my doubts. I was away for a week when she was 6 weeks (Hubby looked after the dogs) and when i came back i saw an amazing difference and also i could feel puppies moving all over her tummy.

My other bitch had 2 matings she is due 10 or 12 days after my first bitch is due, looking at her i have my doubts but as for symptoms ?????? She has the same as my other bitch. She is much more loving (if that is possible) she has been off her food and had a few days being sickly, she is now eating like a horse (very unusual for this bitch as she is such a picky eater) she has a clear discharge, bigger pink nipples, I measured her around the ribs, waist and hips the day i mated her and she has grown 3" at all 3 places. I am just waiting as my guess is that she is going to surprise us and shoot up the last week (mind you i could be wrong, but i really hope i am not)

A tie does not automatically mean puppies - I had two good matings and ties from my bitch and she didnt take :( The following season, after mating, she told us she was pregnant at 3 weeks by going to the back door of the car, waiting to be lifted onto the back seat (instead of the caged boot with the others). I still wouldnt believe it without a scan, following the missed mating!

Hi, i had a slip mating when i mated my bitch ( no tie at all) and she had 8 puppies ! so just goes to show a tie is not always needed.:-)

The dogs know when the time is right better than we or any vet does so let nature take its course & fingers crossed she has puppies for you.
My bitch JRT had 1 mating & produced her biggest litter to date of 7 & she wasn't mated until day 16 of her season as she weren't having any of it before hand & made that quite clear to the male.

My friend has a schnauzer bitch which has been mated a few times in the past 3 years but to no avail she sometimes carries but then re absorbs IMO this is natures way of saying she just shouldn't have puppies so he will not be trying her again as she is now 5.

Good luck.
