Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Single mum, limited budget, what food?
- By Guest [gb] Date 18.11.04 14:30 UTC
Hi,
Im a single mum with 2 dogs and was wondering if you could help me to find a dog food that would suit my two springer spaniel dogs?
I can only afford £20 a month for their food after paying for their health insurance and putting money in the pot for their innoculations, frontline and worming treatments.
I currently feed them a tin of Pedigree a day each with mixer and they get "treats" from my child but i would prefer to feed a dry complete for simplicity, better nutrition and they enjoy it more.
I cannot feed BARF as i am vegetarian. I know they need meat proteins but i cannot abide touching raw meats, hence the complete food thing.

Any help from anyne here would be greatly appreciated.
Sarah
(cannot leave an e.mail address as this is my brothers PC and his e.mail is for business uses, sorry)

If you are near a Jollye's (or some other large feed stores) you can get 'Breederpack' Complete Food for Working Dogs at £6.99 for 15 kilos.

For a springer you will likely find a Kilo will last 4 or 5 days per dog so that is around 60 days for one dog or a month for two.

Actually if you registered with Ardengrange for their breeder/Proffessional user scheme their Classic Adult is only £19.99 which would work out in your price range.

Another food which you can buy at most feed merchants at under £15 a bag is Autarky, it has herbs added and has been fed with success by many board members.

It is possible to buy a pretty good quality dry food in your budget.

£15 for a 15kilo sack??  I paid £11.99 for mine :D :D  but then they sell loads of it at that shop, its really popular.

It has recently been aquired by another company and prices have gone up, think it was an extra pound or two when I last bought a bag.

Can you register if you not a breeder?

Brainless,

How recently did the company change hands?  Who is the new owner?   The reason I ask is that the first bags I bought to try it out (3kg) smelled just like chicken crisps :)  but when I bought the 15kg bag it didn't smell the same at all, not nearly as nice.  Is this normal?  I'm just wondering if new owner means new formula and different attitude. :(

I know just how you feel Sarah and can sympathise from first-hand experience and I don't mean from just being a spaniel owner!

Autarky does my dogs just fine and better than any other food I have tried, regardless of the cost.  I can currently buy a 15kg sack for just over £11 and it lasts weeks (about 4) sometimes longer, sometimes not.

If you phone The Working Dog food Company, or email them, they will let you know details of your local stockist and who sells for the best price locally.

Best Wishes

Asked a freind to pick a bag up from the feed merchant, and it had gone up (last two weeks or do) and was told Autarky had been sold off.  Hadn't taken note of any change in smell, but I mix mie with the Arden Grange.
