Hi, my bitch is now on day 63. There has been a little stickly discharge from her for the last 2 days, but nothing else. How long in your experience do I leave it before calling vet to intervene if labour does not start? She seems perfectly ok in herself. From the books I have read, they suggest end of day 64 or day 65.

My girl whelped on day 65 last year, everything was fine! As long as it's not a singleton pup I'm sure it will happen soon.
i guess I am just more impatient than she is!

I will be the same in a few weeks time, I hate the waiting too!

It is like baking a cake, she is just browning the tops for you :-)

Hi,
Know how you feel! I have a bitch here who is on day 65 from the last mating and no sign of labour. She's had the mucus strings from her vulva but this has stopped now. Her babies are still moving and apart from being heavily pregnant she seems fine. At the moment I'm just sitting and waiting. It's all a bit difficult as she's not my girl and I don't really know her so I can't really be sure how she's feeling (being in a strange house etc.) However as there are no worrying signs I think I will sit tight until tomorrow and see how things go.
There is such a fine line between letting nature take it's course and leaving things too long. Fingers crossed she will get on with it tonight/tomorrow. If she doesn't then I think I will have to get her examined by my vet. Although she seems fine, I have in the back of my mind that she may have inertia due to her sudden change in home environment.

Day 64. - Yip still waiting too. She is digging her whelping box up, and starts shivering when she tries to lie still sometimes. I am a first-timer so I appreciate all your replies and words of reassurance.

Hi
Still no babies here!
I think your girl would benefit from a trip to the vets as soon as possible (even if it's only to reassure you). If she's scratching up and you have noticed shivering then I think your girl really should get on and have these babies.
I don't want to worry you too much but if you girl is displaying some of the signs of labour and she's overdue then there may be a medical reason why she's hasn't got going properly.
Have you been taking her temperature to see if it's dropped? Is she still eating happily? Is there any discharge from her vulva (i.e. strings of mucus or anything blood like)?
Is she 64 days from the first mating or last mating?
Your vet will want to know all these things so be sure to tell him when you take her.
Take a box and a hot water bottle to the vets, she may be close to having her babies and the car ride might get things going, the box etc. will be useful if she delivers on the journey. Also the vet may (depending on circumstances) give her an Oxytocin injection and this could also result in babies being born on the journey home.
The bitch I'm looking after has no signs of the start of labour so at the moment I'm not unduly worried. I'm assuming her eggs were fertilised a few days after the last mating, which is why she's still hanging on!
Good luck, let us know how you get on.
Chrissy
Thanks, I spoke to vet on the phone just now. She said not to worry, because she is eatting and discharge is clear sticky stuff.
I'll keep you posted. Also good Luck with your own.

Well that's good news then. I expect she will get on with it when she's ready.
The little girl I'm looking after has still made no progress and is eating a bit. Her mucus strings have gone. To be on the safe side she's booked into the vets this evening. Just going to get her checked over and take things from there.
Look forward to hearing about your babies when they arrive!
