Of my bit5ches two hardly ever swelled noticeably but both went on to have pups with no problems, and were more than happy to be mated.  It is in fact as the engorgement starts to subside that most bitches are ready to stand.

Yes, it's weird that often the keenest bitches stay quite small.  It's almost as if they know the dog might have trouble hitting such a small target, so they stand extra still!  I have been amazed at the small size of a couple of bitches that have come for mating, and in one instance the bitch had already had a litter of 10, born naturally.  My bitches are bigger than that when they are not in season!

A bitch that we had years ago never used to swell at all even at her most fertile time, she did have one litter and the stud dog didn't have any problems finding the target either!  I was totally amazed

My Penny always looks as if she is prolapsing, she cant sit down for at least 2 weeks.

One of my bitches looks as if she's grown another head on her rear when she's in season - and it goes bright red as well , bit like one of those monkeys.  Non-doggy people look at her in horror and ask if she has a tumour or something.  Even before she had any puppies she swelled more than I had ever seen, and always looked as if she was coming into season.

hen I took her to be mated this time, the stud dog's owner looked at her in horror and said he would never be able to get in through all that, but she flirted for ages and got him so fired up that he managed OK, and she is now in whelp.
