Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Protein free diet??
- By archer [gb] Date 16.11.04 18:44 UTC
On another post a member mentions that she feeds a protein free ,veg only diet to a 7 month old dog since protein made him aggressive.I asked who recommended this as I am a little worried and confused at a young dog being fed only veggies but have had no reply.
I've never heard of this before...has any one else?. It sounds more like the old wives tale...raw meat will make a dog aggressive. Can a dog be raise without meat and or protein...surely not?

Hi Archer

I believe even plants contain protein - aren't proteins the building blocks of life ? :)

I can't believe a protein-free diet (if it could be managed) would be survivable for long. Low-protein, maybe. Soya, for example, is a high-protein plant, and not one I'd choose to feed (one of mine had terrible bloat problems with soya).

Thats exactly what I thought...it just didn't sound right. In the post I was refering to she said her dog wasn't allowed any protien but if you read the above link its not protein free...its a veg diet(complete food)....completely different.

No animal can survive by consuming no protein.

Most foods contain either complete or incomplete protein.

Commercial dog foods are made up of mainly cereal(s) which is incomplete protein; hence why you see the added amino acids at the end of the ingredient list (if the ingredients are listed of course.......) :D
