Topic Dog Boards / General / Are you your dogs "mummy" or "daddy"?
- By ozzie72 [au] Date 13.11.04 06:04 UTC
I was wondering if anyone else refers to themselves as mummy or daddy when referring to their dogs?

We were visiting non dog owning friends the other night and one of my dogs was trying to jump on my lap and i said "go to daddy" Weeeelll i got a weird look from my friends, but to me it's normal

Hubby(die hard tough guy) also says "go to mummy"  surely we aren't the only ones,or are we???

Us too :D  Not only that our parents are grandmas and grandads.  Well, you have to call them something for the dogs to know who to go to!  That's my excuse anyway ;)

As we have 4 children and they obviously call us mum and dad, then thats the names the dogs recognise for us...........that's my excuse anyway.....lol.
- By Charlotte [gb] Date 13.11.04 10:49 UTC
Yes we are mummy and daddy and he is my baby boy!!....his name is Tommy but often call him bobby boy that then turns into mummy's bobby/baby boy...he is very ill at the moment...see my health thread.  He is much more than a dog to me, he is my friend.  It may be alot to place on a dog, but I dont think he is aware of it!

- By Caninechic [gb] Date 13.11.04 12:24 UTC
Yep, we're Mummy & Daddy to our dogs and cats too! And my parents are Grandma & Grandpa, and my sister calls them her nephews! You're definitely not alone!
- By TracyL [gb] Date 13.11.04 12:49 UTC
Absolutely - Mum, Dad, big sisters - Sparky and Busby even have Aunties and Uncles! And to think I once laughed scornfully at Christmas cards with pet names on - it'll be pawprints, the works, this year!
- By Jackie M [gb] Date 13.11.04 13:39 UTC
Yes we tell our dogs to go to mum or dad.     My sons name is Mark but to the dogs he's markie. Recenty I started buying markies for them and every time we say 'markies coming' the poor dogs are looking for a treat!!!!!
- By katyb [gb] Date 13.11.04 14:37 UTC
yep we are mummy and daddy and my kids call max thier little brother. infact they all say he is their favourite brother! its because he never hogs the playstation!
- By dollface Date 13.11.04 19:26 UTC
LOL :D That is too funny lmao

I always refer to us as mommy and daddy and so does my hubby... I think its because we take care of them and dogs are very needy just like children so we see them as our children. They just have 4 legs and wear a fur coat lol

I have some people look at me weird that do not own dogs, but eh I don't care whatever. There loss if they have never know the love of a dog and what great happiness one-several can bring...

My inlaws refer to their dog as my hubbbies lil bro, my hubby says that they have more pictures of Jay- Jay then him lol
- By yorkiefamily [in] Date 13.11.04 20:50 UTC
i am definitly mummy to my yorkies sometimes i say "mamma" for short so like you i say "come to mamma darling"
- By Sheena [gb] Date 13.11.04 23:08 UTC
Us too.

I 've taken training classes for years and when people phone me they refer to themselves as Fido's mum or dad.

One couple who adpted a retired greyhound but had no children always called themselves Gem's person
- By Gonzo [gb] Date 14.11.04 04:04 UTC
Well, im Male but I have always been refered to as Gonzo's Mam. So its kind of stuck, and I say "Come to Mummy" :)
- By Alexanders [gb] Date 14.11.04 21:19 UTC
We do too.  The other day I was discussing my Mums dog Tyler with my six year old.  He pointed out that if his Nan was Tylers Mum, then that means Tyler must be my brother - I had to agree!  I don't think twice about referring to people as dogs Mums or Dads, but it did set me thinking when I considered I had a dog for a brother!

absolutly but it must confuse star she has 2 mams me and her natural mam
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 14.11.04 21:47 UTC
I'm definately their mummy! At training we often resort to saying fidos mum e.t.c. because we can usually remember the dogs name but not the owner!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 15.11.04 02:51 UTC
I don't think of my dogs as my children (I have human children, and the dogs are lots less trouble :D ), but as my girls, but family always say I am a Grandmother whenever one of them has had a litter.  bit confusing that, as I have five generations, and that would make me Grandma to four of them :D

I would like to think of myself as the 'boss' but doubt the dogs do!!!
- By ozzie72 [au] Date 15.11.04 04:46 UTC
Come on Brainless ;) your not a closet mummy are you? :D Dont be shy;)
- By husky [gb] Date 15.11.04 07:54 UTC
We are mummy and daddy too, and we have Grandma and Grandad. My Mum carries photos of the dogs around with her, and likes to show people she meets her 'grandchildren'. She has 7 'real' grandchildren, but she doesn't have photos of those! And she always sends me a mothers day card from the dogs!
- By GSPMUM Date 15.11.04 13:41 UTC
Us too, mummy & daddy.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 15.11.04 14:15 UTC
I think that if you have children in the house, it is inevitable that you will be called whatever your children call you :) Although I don't think of my dogs as my 'babies' - they are my children, as I have to provide the same sort of care that I did for my human children. Some sort of name is important, particularly in our house, where we often give the dogs notes or other items to deliver to other members of the family :D

Mine are my babies!!! Therefore they have granmas cousins, uncles aunts you name it!!!

The neighbours think we've lost the plot!! ha!! :D
- By michelled [gb] Date 15.11.04 15:56 UTC
sure;ly this is totally normal!!!!!
- By bellas mum [us] Date 15.11.04 17:58 UTC
Totally normal with all our poochies - they even know my parents as mummy and daddy when they stay there too !!  It's probably only weird if you have not grown up in a 'doggy' environment:-)
