Topic Other Boards / Foo / Is it ok to bleach them?
- By Maudlily [gb] Date 11.11.04 11:01 UTC
Hi all

I have a set of white muslin type curtains that have been partially bleached a yellow colour from the sun.  The 'normal' whiteners do not seem to work so wondered if it would be ok to use bleach.  Does anyone know if this would work?

Thanks for any advice :)

I was at home yesterday, and watching day-time TV - somebody was soaking net curtains in a steradent solution!!!

Might be worth a try.

I usually soak mine in a mild bleach solution. Mine have always been o.k. but I'm not taking any responsibility if yours don't after my advice LOL

You can get a 'curtain white' I think it is made by Dylon and comes in sachets.

Somehow this question reminded me of this thread http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?tid=58371#fnp :D

:D Thanks for the advice, I'll actually try steradent on one and bleach on the other and compare the results (Isabel, would you believe I'm actually in the lower half of 30!)  My god, it's all come true, I have turned into my mother   :D

I would be very wary of using ordinary bleach on your muslin, it can cause yellowing and actually rot the fabric  especially delicate fabrics.

If I have this type of problem I use Dispel OXYGEN fabric stain remover.  It can be bought cheaply in tesco and can be sprayed on or soaked, it can also be used in various strengths.  It doesn't leave a smell and hasn't damaged any of my delicates yet :D

Just a quick update to say thanks for all the suggestions, but bleach and steradent didn't work and by this time I was rapidly losing the will to attempt saving them   Have just bought a new pair for a bargain £7.99 in Tchibo :)
Thanks again all (will try Dispel when these new lot start fading!)
