Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / How Many Times Stud?
- By Guest [gb] Date 09.11.04 14:46 UTC
How many times could I use my dog at stud? He is quite pop in my breed at the moment but I dont want to over do it!

Just out of intrest how many times has the most popular stud dog ever been used?

I no someone who only let her dog be used 3/4 times a year!  everyone wanted to use him but she was very selective with who her dog was used on  and if he already had 4 lined up in the year she wouldn't take anymore.

This is actually a very important question. If you look at the KC "Breed Record Supplement" you will find that apart from stud dogs who are used on very rare occasions, mainly pet dogs mated to "The dog down the road" there are not that many active stud dogs in any breed. This can lead to all sorts of problems in the future by reducing the size of the available gene pool. It could happen that in a numerically small breed that one dog was really spectacular! That everybody was so enamoured by that dog that unknown to each other everyone used this paragon of virtue! Just imagine the disaster for the breed. Suddenly the gene pool has reduced to nothing!

Something which I think stud dog owners should bear in mind.

There is no straightforward answer to this one. It very much depends not only on how numerically strong your breed is but how diverse the gene pool is. Years down the line, it would not be desirable to find that every line goes back to your dog - particularly if, years down the line, something nasty appears in the  breed from a recessive gene that your dog was carrying. If your dog is very popular you can afford to be even more selective than usual & only pick the bitches you think will suit him best. It should be quality not quantity :D

Personally I only let my dogs out maximum about 3 times a year.  However looking at the BRS so far this year I can think of at least 5 dogs who have been used 6 or more times already.  I think it is important to consider the type of bitch that is coming to your dog.

Ask the bitch owner the following  "what do you hope to achieve (other than puppies) by using my particular dog on your bitch".  Another question to ask (if they sound like a complete novice) is why they want puppies and what is their interpretation of the breed standard.

My mother and I have put off many "would be breeders" that way.

It is a big responsibility letting your dog out at stud.  Half the responsibility lies with YOU!  It is not a question of taking a stud fee and sitting back - not that I am suggesting that you would but it is amazing how little back up some people get from the stud dog owners.

This may shock you, Ch. Valglo Casanova at Crossguns (Staffordshire Bull Terrier) produced 32 registered litters in 2002 totalling 169 puppies, no doubt 2003 & 2004 were equally active years for this dog!!

i know the dog in question , and he has been put to some terrible stafford bitches with major faults!

Thats nothing - there is a Flatcoat - long dead - that sired 63 litters in his lifetime.  Three others were over 40 litters as well.

A couple of present day ones I think are probably going for the same record.

i believe the staffords ch wyrefare prince naseem and ch judael both barrels at nozac have both sired well over 100 litters.i think without a doubt if ch valglo cassanova has not yet he soon will have.i can not believe (well i know) that  every one of these females were of  good quality.i suppose it is upto the stud dog owner and everyone is different.at the other end of the scale i phoned many years ago to use a champion dog which i thought highly of and he was very well bred only to be told the dog was not open to the public and i believe he only sired a few litters for the owner and close friends, this also happens quite a lot in dogs bred for performance like greyhounds, working terriers etc.

Flimmoric Fanclub has been dead for quite some time yet his sperm is still being used to produce litters today!

Trying to find a Weimaraner pedigree without him in it is nigh on impossible!
