On this morning just now. It was a very unruly dog as most/all huskies are. Looked to be crossed with an Akita to me. Anyway they had this trainer in who got it to come back when called by using treats if that didnt work they used a gas collar. Ive never heared of these things are they any good.
Not that I intend trying 1 Id never trust my Huskies off lead full stop.
I saw that too, looked like an Akita to me too, or an Akita X, nothin glike any husky I've seen. I hated the way the husband kept saying 'the dog' instead of calling him by his name but at least they are on there way to sorting the probs they were having and that Toby didn't add to the numbers of dogs given up by their owners every year. I think some people would agree with using those type of collars, others wouldn't, seemed to work in this case though but might not in every situation.

I thought Roger M did quite well to get the dog back looked a a very poor Akita or a cross
I felt sorry for the dog, it was so destructive but looked like it had minimal exercise and opportunity to run off its energies! In addition to which, it had problems with recall-from what I've seen being discussed on this board, huskies should not be exercised off lead-seemed like he had inherited that trait! You would wonder why they continued to let him off lead though (before they had help)-particularly when they made mention of him running into the roads.. :( Also, I was shocked when they asked the family who helped with the dog, and it was only down to the mum-when I was younger and we had cats and dogs (and rabbits, fish and hamsters etc) it was always on the proviso that we understood the responsibility and took care of them-stood me in good stead for the future! :)

what on earth does a gas collar do? make them pass out so you can catch them?
It appeared to emit a puff of air towards the dogs face-the trainer described it as similar to being "slapped in the face if you are hysterical"- basically it was to get the dogs attention..... It did appear to work, and the guy said it was harmless, but can't imagine I'd appreciate being "slapped in the face" everytime my attention drifted off! :(

probaley only work the 1st couple of times anyway! alot of these things have an initial shock value!

The guy was Roger Mugford, he also invented the anti bark citronalla collar, which (as far as im concerned) works for a while then has no effect what so ever once the dog get's used to it. This morning the gas collar did seem to work on that dog, but it didn't look intent on running away, Did it? I would like to have seen what happend if the dog had been really exicited. Viv
I saw ''This Morning'' with the Husky X too, as soon as it came on i knew people on this site would be talking about it !

One thing I like is they stress to have the dog examined to rule out physical problems first

I must admit I do like Roger M he might have some ideas I don't agree with but he is very passionate about dogs

The Collar was a Masterplus Collar (or equivalent). This emits a puff of cold air which surprises the dog (the noise, the air, the wet sensation). It is triggered by the person "controlling" the dog. These are not the same as the electric shock collars.
There are several gases (clear gas, citonella etc). Where there is a real need, these collars can be extremely effective in resolving unwanted behaviour. I know of many cases where reputable trainers have resorted to these where other methods have not worked.
I also found that there was a large number of people in the Agility and Working Dog world who have employed their use.
The collar does not harm the dog physically (I have worn one!).
There are arguements for and against this type of thing. I am for them as a last resort but would never try to use then without advise from a reputable trainer and have exhauseted all other fair methods of training.
I would also never try to use one for training a behaviour that particular breeds would also resist against.
Michelled like that comment its the only way Id get hold of my husky.
Dont think my dogs would take a blind bit of notice of 1.

glad my SOH is understood somewhere!!!!
