Did you vet not tell you the side affects when briefing you on the surgery?
Generally before an operation is planned this is discussed at length.
I personally have no experience of it. :-)
sorry happygirl dont know anything about removing Anal Glands, there does'nt seem to be so many people on C/D as there use to be, been very quiet :(
Hope your dog is ok and all goes well :)
Best Wishes Heidi
If people don't have any experiences of something, they cannot offer advice! Blocked anal glands I know about, removing them no; as far as I am aware, it is not a procedure that is performed that often. But I do know it has been discussed previously on the boards, so do a search and you should come up with some information or indeed ask your vet, they are the best people to offer advice in this circumstance!

Hello Happygirl.
It was my dog on the previous thread who had his anal glands removed. If you still want to know more about it let me know.

Both my cavaliers had thier anal glands removed. My vet did bring in a specialist to do it as there can be complications and there are many I think nerve endings that are at risk from being damaged.
But both my 2 were fine after the op and no problems, just so glad they had it done and I would never hesitate having it done again if one of my dogs needed it.
In fact that op was easier than all the problems I have just had following my labs castration

Hi
This probably isnt any help at all, as looking at the date of your post you have probably already had the op. However earlier this year my Labrador had her anal glands removed. It took her a little while to recover as she was very sore, and she pulled her bottom along the ground for quite a while. However since having the stitches out she bounced back. I have had no problems with incontinance, however everything effects an individual dog differently. I hope this helps you in some way. All I can I tell you is how my dog was affected by the op. Just for reference she will be 8 this christmas, so we will see whether within the next couple of years she gaines any side affects i.e. incontinance

Hi
My female Basset Hound had her anal glands removed many years ago as they kept filling up and she used to drag her bottom along the ground a lot. My vet did empty them for us several times, but they just filled up again, and the smell is not a nice one.
She was a fully grown Hound of 4 stone plus and after the op she was just fine. She never suffered with incontinence and lived to be 10 years old, dying from a twisted gut on Christmas Day after an emergency operation from which she never recovered .
I hope this helps you
Carol
