My Lab puppy was castrated Thursday as calming measures because of his severe hip dysplasia he is 8 months old.  He is wearing a Buster collar as he is hell bent on getting his stitches out.
Big problem though is he can wreck, and smash to bits a buster collar in a couple of hours which is proving very expensive at £3.83 a time.  I have been up all night with him as he won't fit in his cage with it on as is just going mental.
Spoke to receptionist and nurses at vets yesterday but they are at a loss as they have nothing else and never come accross it before.
I am going to see the vet this morning but can anyone on here reccomend anything as I am at my wits end.  He has always been exceptionally hypo anyway but he is ignoring all toys bones etc to fight with this collar and I am already exhausted god knows how we will survive 11 days.

Dont know much about this kind of thing but could you try him on one of those plastic mesh muzzles for some point in the day?
Just a thought.

Could you try putting a t-shirt, PJ bottoms on him, that was the only thing that worked with Obi, he may just hate the collar?

It sounds as if he is getting really stressed about his collar; I would suggest using maybe some Rescue Remedy or similar to help calm him. There are other things you could try also such as herbal calming tablets, DAP diffuser (which is very helpful but may take a few days to start working) etc.

I would also suggest asking about the "vet2vet" Bite Not collar. It is different to the Buster in that it is like a normal collar but very wide so stops the dog from bending its neck too much, but may be less upsetting and more helpful.....

Try some Aloe vera gel on the wound site to lessen the irritation too :)

I presume he is wearing a traditional Elizabethan collar?

Have you heard about the 'Mooncollar'? It fits around the neck and basically looks like a small life ring. He wouldn't be able to get to it as basically it's a big collar - its perfectly safe and has been very popular in Europe and has just entered the UK market.

Other benefits are that it doesn't distract their field of vision as there is no 'cone' which can help them to feel less stressed. It has an inner inflatable tube so you can make it as big or small as you need - especially if your pet has a long or short neck. and it has a washable protective cover over the top. It can be attached to their normal collar and has velcro to adjust the size.

It sounds ideal for your problem as he wouldn't actually be able to get his teeth anywhere near it but it will stop him being able to bend round and bite his stitches.

I would love to say I know where to get one but I don't, it's new to the uk. I can get you one through my supplier but im not sure I could get it to you in time.

It could be something you want to consider as a future purchase though - especially as he is only young and you don't want to be faced with the same problem should he need to wear a collar in future.

If you want any more info about it feel free to message me and ill see what I can find out for you :)

Sorry I can't be of immediate help but I read your post and it sounds ideal for you.

The main website for the collar is french but there is an 'english version' you can see what its like here http://www.mooncollar.com/
