As I'm sure most of you know, I am not generally favourably disposed to new
dog laws dreamed up by politicians, as these are invariably misguided, poorly
worded and Breed Specific.
However, the State of Maryland, USA, is considering complete new dog laws
which are NOT Breed Specific and which place emphasis firmly on the
responsibility of dogs' owners and on the welfareof the dogs themselves. In
other words, it's "Punish the Deed, Not the Breed", which is how it should be.
If passed, these laws will not only cancel out all BSL laws in Maryland, but
could set a very viable and workable template for other States in the USA, as
well as being a good example to show politicians worldwide of how, by
consulting GENUINE canine experts and wityh some careful thought, good dog
laws can be enacted. Laws which do not penalise the dogs, or responsible dog
owners.
The Maryland legislature is meeting tomorrow - Tuesday, 19th February 2002 -
to vote on the proposed laws. Support from as many individuals as possible -
especially from the International dog owning community - will go a long way
towards passing the first of what will hopefully be many better dog laws.
After all, we are ALL dog lovers and it IS our collective responsibility to
ensure that good laws are passed.
A mail from Marika Renn, one of the leading US anti-BSL campaigners follows,
with links where e-mail messages of support can be sent. Please check the
links out and, if you are favourably disposed towards the Bill, send an
e-mail in support to the legislators ahead of Tuesday's meeting.
Thanks!

Monday in the States is the critical day for calls and posts to support this
bill WITH AMENDMENTS, as the hearing is Tues. National support is requested
on the site. international support would "ice the cake".
On the sites below, one may find sample letters, all about the bill, etc. I
am respectfully asking that we mobilize for this bill---if it passes,
positive reforms can be far reaching. Please, at minimum, take moments of
your time on Monday, give accolades to those who courageously went against
the tide, and developed this bill. Additionally, if time and motivation
permit, follow the instructions on the site on how to have greatest effect.
These are the enclaves from whence true reform is born. May we all do our
part to give it wings, for ourselves, for our dogs, for the future.
