Hi, I have a 6yr bitch, Hazel, KC registered, good pedigree.  Am seeking stud for first litter, in or around London.  You can reach me at ruth@diversity.ndo.co.uk or phone 07840 812521.  Many thanks, Justin.

It would have helped if you'd mentioned what breed she is, but I think you'll find in most breeds 6 years is considered too old for a first litter.

I agree, 6 years is definitely too old for a first litter.

Hi Justin,

As the other posters have said, your bitch is really too old to be having a first litter.  Leaving it until this age could result in serious medical complications - at best, this could cost you a lot of money ......... at worst, it could result in the death of your much loved pet, along with any puppies she may be carrying.

Time has flown too fast, I'm afraid - probably best to look for a reputable breeder, with hip scored and eye tested stock, if you were wanting a companion for your girl.

6 years of age is within the kennel clubs rules. :-)

You are absolutely correct Lesley :D - however, there is more to life than rules, which is why I have unemotionally stated some of the risks involved, and the original poster must make their own decisions.

The KC make no reference to age for first litters, only the ages between which they will register litters, because it varies so much between all the breeds. The breed clubs (who have more knowledge of their individual breeds) are the best to advise on ages for first litters.

I personally retire my girls from breeding at 6, I think it is way too old especially for a first litter.  A friends bitch has just whelped a litter of 6 sadly 3 died, it wasn't a long labour, just too much for the poor girl...........this wasn't her first litter either
