Well,I took Cooper to the vets on Thursday and he had his treatment for mange. On Friday there was a huge improvement. He was only scratching his legs a bit. Saturday he wasn`t scratching or biting at all , but on Sunday he was scratching at his legs again. Yesterday he was biting at his legs and scratching at his body and ears. It`s not excessive, and he doesn`t do it too much, and I can generally stop him doing it if I take his mind off of it,but I don`t know if I am worrying over nothing,or if it means the problems is still there and is going to get worse again. Is it normal for a puppy to scratch and bite himself? Any advice greatly appreciated as if it is thought that he still has a problem then I`ll phone the breeder to see what he suggests.
Thanks

have you used a diluted dip, I think it is called alugen , it is usually necessary a few days after treatment to do this , as the skin is still retaining mange, Mange is a parasite like any other , and like flea's , has to be killed , it is a very clingy parasite , so the dip should do it , if you decide to dip just be careful of the eyes , and if you have done it already then a second time should clear it

Sadly Alugen isnt licensed here now, which is a shame as it was the best you could ever get for fleas, mange etc... we always used it but I believe they couldnt get the trails done on it too expensive or something.Wish I could get some is it available where you are Mari?

Is it something that I can get from a vet? (I live in Berkshire).I spoke to the breeder earlier who said he had called all the other puppies owners and none of them had the problem I did,and suggested that it may just have been a really bad allergy to a flea bite and to give it a few more days before doing anything else.

Hi - why don't you phone your vet and ask his/her advice? They can't charge you over the phone but they will charge you if you go into the surgery.Having read your previous post about all the different drugs etc the vet gave your pup when you last went to them I would think they are the best people to advise you.

Hope your pup gets better soon.

What food are you using? Is it the one the breeder supplied? Could it be a food allergy? (Just thinking out loud...)

It could be a food allergy I suppose. He was originally on Eukanuba, but I am gradually changing it over to pedigree chum. ( I`m on a pension and the eukanuba is a tad on the expensive side for me). He hasn`t scratched or bitten himself too much today. He generally has just given himself a quick once over when he has woken up from a sleep. Just in case it was a flea allergy I have also completely sprayed the house from top to bottom with a flea killer. He`s due at the vets on Thursday for his first jab,so if there are any problems I`ll be able to ask then. Fingers crossed there won`t be.

Well that sounds encouraging, the food thing might be worth bearing in mind and if you do need to change I'd recomend Burns - it sounds expensive at £31/sack - but it's made from 'good stuff' and the dogs love it, great for coat condition too :-)
