Some of you will remember my many posts this year regarding Millie's itching.
I tried many things, and about three months ago I changed her over to Burns, and began a programme of feeding her tinned fish every friday, eg sardines or mackeral and bought evening primrose oil to put in her food each night. We also got Malaseb shampoo from the vets.
Well something is definately working. She went to my sisters for a week in early September where she missed out on a week's worth of Burns (my sister wouldn't entertain feeding it to her, and I don't think she remembered the evening primrose oil), and was shampooed with Head and Shoulders (she refuses to believe that I have tried that and it didn't work) but we immediately resumed normal service after that week and I have since noticed that Millie scratches less than half of what she used to. In fact I may be brave enough to say she hardly scratches at all now - apart from obligatory first thing in the morning scratching sessions which I expect a lot of dogs do, just like humans do. It has also been about six weeks since I last Frontlined her and normally after 4 weeks she would be itching like mad so I would frontline her dead on four weeks, but its been about 6 weeks (must do that asap) and she is hardly itching so to me that says it probably isn't a flea problem but is definately a food related problem, particularly as the change in food appears to be working.
Anyway she went to the groomers today and straight away they asked how she was getting on with her skin and I said that she seems to be so much better to me, and when I picked her up they said that there is a DEFINITE improvement, just one little red patch on her head, but other than that a real improvement in her skin and they were very pleased, so I'm NOT just imagining it! Ok so we don't actually know what it is that's worked, the Burns, the fish on Fridays, the Evening Primrose oil or the Malaseb but it doesn't matter because I'm happy to continue with all that anyway! The groomers agreed with my thinking that its probably not the Malaseb as I don't use it regularly enough for it to have an effect so it probably is something in her diet.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone for their tips throughout this year, particularly tohme and many others of you whose names I can't remember but I'm grateful to you all. Ok so its not completely solved yet but we're heading in the right direction and I'm very pleased! Millie is a year old on Wednesday so its taken a while but we're getting there. Cheers! :-D
What great news Jess, isnt it a massive relief when you notice you dog didnt scratch for 1 day, then 2. I know how hard you worked to fix this problem,i know it would have been a frustrating journey,it would have been so easy to stick Millie on to steroids and forget about it!
Well done :D
