In my last couple of posts,  advice given seems to stop as soon as I mention My dog is a x breed is this a problem on this site.Because if Im talking about my leonbergers I get great help and advice.
- By SharonM Date 21.10.04 21:51 UTC
I don't think it's a problem, people usually answer when the have the same breed as they know the breed and their habits.

I'm sure somebody will answer your posts soon.

I think you're imagining slights where none are intended, hooch. Many breeds have their own individual foibles, whereas crossbreeds and mongrels (and we love them all, because they're all dogs) can have all of them! I personally know zilch about leonbergers (except that they're big dogs who I'm told are black at birth), but I have owned a mongrel so can advise in that respect. What is your cross's problem?

Thanks, sorry Having bad day. just being a moaning sod. Pup seems to have lost a lot of his teeth yesterday and today and now he is not eating his mouth seems really sore. He did eat porridge. but he keeps crying out in pain. Im not sure if he should go to vet.I dont think the other dogs went though this.He also keeps getting infections in his anal Glands, had them emptied twice already and he's only 18 weeks. He has started to bite at his back end again. so it looks like this maybe a on goin problem with him. Thanks for you time.(He has been on Antibiotics for 10 Days)

Don't worry, we all get tetchy when we're worried about our loved dogs! Poor pup, that certainly seems unusual. Teething affects them all differently, depending on how stoic they are - my lab would never let you know anything was wrong, but a dal shrieked with the slightest pinprick . The mongrel, who was part lab, was also very stoical with pain (which is why we ask what breeding is in any dog) - it seems to be a breed characteristic. Very unhelpful, when you're trying to track down the source of pain.

I'm not a vet, so I would always recommend that the dog is seen by a professional if you have serious concerns, but if he seems well in himself, and is eating soft food, then hopefully there is nothing seriously wrong. Have you checked his mouth for anything stuck in his teeth? A bit of chewed stick or similar caught across his mouth or between his teeth would cause him great discomfort.

His anal gland history worries me - what is his normal diet? (Forgive me if you've already posted this - I have many senior moments!)

He is fed on Aurtarky Puppy 3 times a day. he has left over breakfast ceral in moring(Tiny amount). He also is a lab cross, but he is the biggest baby crys out, just incase you hurt him. He goes to poo about 4 times a day .the poo does have shape but is never very firm.I can not see them doing much good when they pass out to empty the glands. Maybe I need to bulk he's food out?
- By Dill [gb] Date 21.10.04 23:47 UTC
Hi Hooch,
I feed Autarky too (for adults) and the faeces are well formed and quite dry (what a subject! :D ), if your dog is having soft poos then either something he is having in addition to the Autarky is affecting him or it's the Autarky itself.  What breakfast cereal is he getting?  Does it also have milk?  these things can sometimes affect an animal greatly, out of all proportion to the amount eaten ;)

You're right the soft poos aren't helping his anal glands, if they were more firm it could make a big difference, but adding more bulk to his food may not be the way to go.

Hope this helps
Dill

Look I have been having it really rough And I was out of order And the rubbish bit was out of order.  But I was pis88ed off that I kept getting Blanked as soon as I mentioned X breeds. go back have a look at my last 4 posts. I never once mentioned this site I was just having a moan. You have been great J since yesterday but. maybe you have never said anything that you regret. I have had some great advice over the last year, I was moaning so I was'nt go to mention that. But as I didnt mention any  site name I didnt feel Like I was doing 2 much wrong. If I have upset anybody I really am very sorry And I Do vaule your advice.
- By digger [gb] Date 22.10.04 07:38 UTC
If his gums are really sore you can try putting Bongella on them.  Do you soak his dry food?
- By hooch [gb] Date 22.10.04 09:34 UTC
Yes have started to soak food. I have also stoped given him any other food apart from his food. and he has only been on water since yesterday. So I will see how it goes.

Hi Hooch, I fed all my dogs Autarky for 4 months (puppy and adult) before going completey BARF. I did find that the poo's although formed were soft, this changed when their diet changed. Before I fed them Autarky their poo's were firm but excessive. Mine are all labs.

Have you tried freezing a kong for him to suck. My Siamese was distraught while teething went off her food the lot but only for a day or so. Try rubbing his gums if he'll let you.

One of my puppies lost all her teeth at once so she couldn't eat properly & cried - but I think that was out of frustration, not pain, because she was hungry & couldn't eat! Only lasted a couple of days until the adult teeth came through enough for her to get hold of the food. I would be worried about such a youngster having anal gland problems. Have you tried adding bran to his food? Sometimes just feeding too much can make poos sloppy (just going to eat my dinner now ........) :D
- By luvly [gb] Date 22.10.04 12:25 UTC
oh yes i did notice your posting on dogpages . I dont think your posting was fair amie sometimes people only know about certain breeds so you might have to wait for someone to help or write another post . id be greatful for any replies i get even if you dont think its that great .
- By Moonmaiden Date 22.10.04 12:56 UTC
I always have some B Sorb in just in case one of my dogs goes off their food, I know that you can get all the indgrients from chemists but it is more convenient to have it ready to use
- By margaretmck [gb] Date 22.10.04 12:55 UTC
hi hooch, I had the same problem with my puppy when all his teeth fell out at once. He wouldn't touch dried food even if I added water, gravy whatever to make it softer for him. I don't know if I did the right thing but I just stuck to nature diet until his teeth came through. Once they had, I had no problem getting him to eat the dried food again. I also found though that I was being told to feed him on dried food suitable for a big breed dog and the chunks were so big it was putting him off too. I changed onto food for medium breed and he was much happier with that. good luck

Lovelylady? if you go back and read my post properly you will find I said when  I have been given advice it is very good. But When I mentioned x breeds it seemed to stop This has now been sorted .So thank you for pointing out that I post eleswhere I was not aware That I could'nt. Why people have to go on and on about things. if you read my earlier post I said sorry for been wrong but I was having a very bad day.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.10.04 15:20 UTC
There's no problem about posting on other sites, Hooch! I imagine everyone does! Though I am a little surprised that on here you say you have received "great help and advice" about your Leonbergers, and on the other site you say the advice received from here has mostly been rubbish. :( I myself won't bother in future. Sorry we've been wasting your time.
- By Kerioak Date 22.10.04 15:39 UTC
If your pup's pooh is soft then try giving a little less to eat as what they don't digest goes straight though (generally).  This may help the anal glands if it is nothing more serious.  Of couse, if he is looking too thin then don't reduce food intake
- By hooch [gb] Date 22.10.04 15:41 UTC
Im really sorry for posting that most of the advice was rubbish But like I said I was having a really shi**y day and was very wrong. BUT I never mentioned this site once. I have had some very good advice and I did not mean to offend you. But I was peed off that I seemed to be cut short as soon as I mentioned having a cross breed. Look back at my  last 4 post. Once agin Iam sorry But never mentioned CD it was just me moaning Im sure we all have bad days
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.10.04 15:44 UTC
Sure we all have bad days, and I admire you for admitting it - lots of people won't. Perhaps you could point that out on the other site as well? Nobody likes to be referred to as 'snobs' when it is completely untrue. Thanks.
:)
- By hooch [gb] Date 22.10.04 15:54 UTC
I have done that already.I dont normaly do things like that now I no why.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.10.04 16:11 UTC
Thanks for that! I hate it when members of the various sites start sniping at the others. It causes so much unnecessary ill-feeling. Glad you don't really think we're rubbish, anyway! :)
- By luvly [gb] Date 22.10.04 16:25 UTC
hooch i wasent having a go i was simply saying i dont think you were fair . i know we all have a grumble but somtimes we dont know the answer and so you might not get a reply . ive had loads of questions when i first joined and hardly got any posts but i very much doubt its a case of us not liking cross breeds , lots of us on this site have had many ive had many rescues .hopefuly the posts from the girls in this thread has helpted you
- By hooch [gb] Date 22.10.04 16:45 UTC
Yes its all got abit silly really. And The advice I have had in this post has been very helpful.(sounds like Im sucking up now) Next time I have a bad day I will walk the dogs instead!!!!!. My Pup seems abit better he is eating if I soak food. I think we may still have a problem with hes anal glands but he is off to vet to see what eles we can do.
