has anyone had any experience of diabetes in a dog. i have had 6 years of experience but a new problem has me and our vet baffled. after being asleep for a long time or getting very hot, on waking and moving about my boys blood glucose levels drop through the floor ,he faints and immediately wakes up[AFTER URINATING} And his levels go back to normal all this happens in the space of 30 or40 seconds. he is otherwise well and has had every test you could think of and more and we can find no reason so we just have to put up with it ans manage the best we can. it happens 2 or 3 times a week and has got a bit better since i started giving him a gingernut before he gets out of his basket.{it was nearly every day} anyone got any ideas?

Sorry Pru but that is not a problem I came up against. At 6 years you are doing well! My Kate was Diabetic for just over 3 years but then, she was an elderly Labrador when she developed it. He is obviously going hypoglycaemic but as to the reason. . . . . . . I can understand exercise reducing the sugar level but inactivity, sleep, and I would have thought the level would have risen. I guess you have checked the sugar level when he urinates at that time, is that a genuine figure?? I wonder if, because he was asleep you are in effect testing "Old Urine"? Urine which was already in his system and ready to come out so to speak? I always found with Kate that I had to anticipate her insulin requirements or I was always behind developments and causing her levels to yoyo. What I mean is, if her level had got a bit high and I had increased her insulin dose I would lower it again just before the sugar level reached the desirable level. (If you follow what I mean)
