My young dog has started losing the fur round his eyes and around his mouth - I took him to the vets and he was tested neagtive for mange - he was put on antibiotics in case it was an infection but no improvement. A doggy friend said it may be sebhoarric dermatitis and so I got some Seleen shampoo from the Canine Chemist but the darned thing is still there - it seems to make him a little itchy but apart from that he is bouncing with health - anyone got any ideas what this might be. He was put in kennels a week before this started and I think he may have picked this up in there but both my vet and I are at a loss to know what to try next - help ! :-o

One of my sister's dog had a similar problem, purely around the eyes-however, this was due to her other dog grooming Frankie's eyes excessively and caused a reaction resulting in the hair loss.  Don't suppose you have another dog do you?

Yes I have 6 dogs ! but none of them wash Louis face :-) - I was interested to see that Fiona has the same problem with one of her spaniels - I live in a very rural area and wonder if the farmers have been spraying the orchards that surround us with anything he may be allergic to - some one said it could be an allergy to hedgehogs ( we have loads at the moment) I've got him entered at Driffield tomorrow and midland counties but no way is he able to go - such a shame as the rest of him is looking fab ! :-(

  My dog started with symptoms like this at 9 months old - the vet said it's atopia - an allergic reaction to something in his environment.  He had a couple of eye ointment treatments, which didn't work, but now we control it with Prednisole Forte drops - as soon as I see the hairloss starting, he has a drop in each eye 3/4 times a day, for about a week.  For the hairloss around his mouth and under his nose I rub in Fuciderm gel twice a day, also for about a week - usually clear then for a couple of months!

My brothers Lab lost patches of fur round her eyes and it turned out she is allergic to Grouse!
