Topic Dog Boards / Health / Help - whats wrong with his legs?
- By Julie [gb] Date 12.10.04 19:39 UTC
Along with all the other problems my 10yr old SBT has (several other posts on the board) he has now developed a problem with his hind legs.  His legs seem to go into some kind of muscle spasm, normally only one leg at a time, but has happend to both legs at different times.  It seems to involuntarily shoot out behind him as runs.  It happens so quickly he is still moving with his front legs and the back one just ends up trailing behind.  It only seems to happen when he has been immobile for a long time, i.e after waking in the morning and when we return from work.  The rest of the time it doesn't seem to happen.

The Vet put him on vivtonin for two weeks, which I think helped.  However the course has now finished, and it seems to be happening virtually every day now.  The Vet has advised that we should monitor it for the moment before putting him on vivitonin permanently.

Has anyone else ever had this happen?  Is it a circulation problem?  Will it get worse without the medication?  Is there any other form of treatment other than tablets for the rest of his life?

Just so you have the full picture - Last year he has a spleenectomy, he developed colitis 3 months after, and needs ointment every other day for dry eye, plus a couple of other things, but fingers crossed they are now sorted!  Appart from all that he's a really happy lively dog.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Julie (& Fagin)
