My nearly 8 month old lab puppy I have thought over the past few weeks looked occasionally a bit stiff behind, but then he would trot off and look ok so thought it was my imagination.
However last night he looked very stiff on his hind legs and had a slight limp on one.
This morning although putting weight on the leg he still looks stiff and has a slight limp and when he stands still although the leg is on the floor he has not got full weight on it.
I can now assume this has been creeping on over a few weeks, and am worried it may be hip dysplasia.  He comes from tested parents with low scores, but as i have never had a dog with this before I don't know what to look for.   Should i get to my vet asap?

Hi Bev

I would certainly consult your vet as it could be various things but the sooner he is seen and if necessary treated the better.

Hope he is okay

Sounds more like panosteitis to me,

Limit his exersize for a few days as well as seeing the vets. I know its hard but its best in the long run.

I have been to the vets and he is going in Thur to have his knee and hips xrayed.   The vet feels the problem is probaly in his knee but Tico was too busy trying to leap on him and kiss him all over to get a good examination.

Exercise wise he was getting just 15 mins twice a day and he was not playing rough with any other dogs as he is kept alone, so tends to just lay about wherever i am in the house.  His exercise has now slowly gone up over the past few weeks to 30 mins in the morning quiet walking and 10 mins training in the evening and 5 mins walking.
He is not allowed up and down stairs and i have a stair gate fitted to stop him trying.  He is also in a cage at night and when i pop out.

Lets hope Thur it is found to nothing major.

.............. why is it we take our poorly/lame/quiet/etc dogs to the vet and they immediately try to prove us wrong when we say whatever it is we think is wrong by enthusiastically greeting everyone :D

Hope nothing shows up or if it does it is easy to treat and short lasting

taking a dog to the vet is the best way to transform your chronic hobbling dog into the picture of health,as it bounds up & down, totally sound-the vet thinking you are a totally neurotic mother!!!

Don't know how to do smilies yet but I'm laughing!  We are well aware of this phenomenom!  Had one owner this week whose rabbit was displaying a pronounced head tilt (which can be very serious).  As soon as bunny arrived at the surgery he hopped around the consult room without a care in the world.  Owner duly went home only to call 1/2 hour later as bunny was displaying the same signs.  This happened 3 times in 1 day and we're still none the wiser!

Poor owner came in this morning with her cat who had been lethargic and passing blood in her urine, and guess what - happy as Larry once she arrived.  The poor owner is now convinced that we think she has Munchausen's (sp?) by proxy!

I think our pets do it to wind us up sometimes!
