Any suggestions for healthy dog treats for training my new puppy? I steer well clear of all dog foods/treats with added colors (does a dog really care what color the food is???) preservatives salt and sugar. I had been giving her part of her normal food (James Wellbeloved) as rewards, but this does not seem to overly impress her!

Thanks  :-)

Make some liver cake...8 oz liver,4 oz wholemeal flour and 2 eggs. Blitz together ,turn into a baking tray and cook...dead easy.(or you can microwave to make it quicker!!
Make plenty and freeze in portions...dogs LOVE it

Am going to give this a bash tomorrow-quick question though, how long do I have to cook it for and at what temperature?

180oC for 40 minutes

The Liver cake made my pups bowels loose. I would advise only giving small amount at first. My breeder advised frying liver chopped up very small with garlic on its own. No flour or eggs. Then drying it off in a low oven until crisp. This was fine and no runny poo.

But I believe your dog has had problems with loose stools anyway.New food should always be introduced gradually but liver cake should not cause a problem to a dog that has no reactions to other foods with wheat/flour in.

My pup only had loose stools due to steroids and anti biotics. Otherwise she is fine. Maybe it was the wheat/flour. She normaly does not have this in her diet. Thanks for the tip, may come in handy in future when thinking of trying anything new.

Will go out and buy some liver today and give it a whirl!  :-)

Mine is in the oven as we speak... Looks interesting!  The boys enjoyed the extra liver I had though-didn't think such a small amount would go so far!!  But we'll see what the verdict is once it's cooked...

Well wagging tails all round, so it would appear we are on to a winner!! :)  However my boyfriend just appeared through the door asking what I had been baking him..  Didn't have the heart to ask him if he wanted to try any..  :D

I made a batch tonight the dogs love it. I put a lot in the freezer too so i can use it as bribery when I'm training them.

We've just stocked up again...put some in the freezer and cut the rest into small pieces in the fridge. I added carrot this time...gives it a slightly different texture and the boys seem to love it!

How long does it last in the fridge??????
I buy dried sausages, and cut them up and leave them in my bumbag. (convenience is my middle name when taking the dogs to work with me and only have 35 mins from getting up to getting out the door with 2 kids and 2 dogs!!!!!!!!!!!)
(I bought the sausages and then got a lecture about my dogs stomachs when I went back 2 hours later to get some more as I was running low :(  (Hadnt let Beano oiff the lead much and used them as YOU LOVE THE SAUSAGES SO YOU WILL COME BACK TO ME treats. The first time I took them out and let them both off the lead I used quite alot. I now dont use too many treats per walk, but the petshop owner had a go at me telling me my dogs would have the runs and I shouldnt give them as many as it wouldnt be a treat anymore etc etc etc (And I knew that,I just needed him to relate my bumbag with TREATS Um um type thing. AGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH)

The carrot sounds a good idea Archer, I think I'll try that next time.
