Further to my previous post last week, I was just wondering how long it might be before Fagin's colitis settles down again. I decided to go down the live yoghurt route, as I am a little wary of giving anything else at the moment. I have been giving him approx 1 pot a day, in two halves. Anyone any ideas.

It may take a while for it to settle down again. Give it a at least a couple of weeks to get back to normal. I am sure it will settle down soon.

Hi Julie,
My GSD bitch has always suffered from colitis.... It is a horrible thing to have..........
When she is really bad, I do the same as you, the full pot of yoghurt in two halves and as she improves, I start to reduce it down......
I also find, that she can only tolerate chicken based foods and treats............ If I give her beef, lamb, tuna, rawhide etc, it flares up again, so I keep everything chicken based........
Also, my vet is a vet for a large Police Force, and has been for over 40 years now, he has always recommended (don't laugh) :D ''Whiskers Rabbit Cat Food'' in jelly not gravy, for the Forces' GSD's that may have the same problem.....
I was a little sceptical at first, but after trying it, I have to say it works.... although I would only used it while the colitis is flared up or settling down, as it is apparently very gentle on a poorly tummy.......
Hope that helps you a little,

Thanks for the tip about cat food - I feed my cat whiskers, so probably have some in the cupboard, not too sure how the cat will feel when I start giving his food to the dog!
He is on Naturdiet, which seemed to really suit the condition, until the little **** decided to start biting and licking his foot to excess until it became infected. I only wish I had realised what the antibiotics would do before I gave them to him (I'm a bit angry with the vet for not warning me beforehand this could happen, but at least I now know for the future).

Biting and licking of feet and anti biotics. My GSD has started doing the same thing. She has had 5 lots of anti biotics in the last 7 months. Was this a direct result of the anti biotics. I have voiced my concern about so many but the vet assures me that it is necessary following her present problem with Anal Gland draining and biting and scratching. Two lots previously for cystitus. She thinks there is infection in the scabs. My poor baby she is spending so much time not being well.

Sorry, I think you may have got a bit mixed up. Maybe I didn't explain properly.
Fagin has always licked his feet - never got to the root of the problem, but every so often licks to excess which has now caused infection. The antibiotics were given to clear the infection, which in turn has caused a flare up of his colitis. It is the fact that my Vet didn't warn me the antibiotics may cause a flare up that I am not best pleased about.
