Hello,
My pup is coming up to 5 months old and I was looking for advice on how to calm him down and stop him jumping. I don't mean jumping up on people, he doesn't do that - I mean literally just jumping up in the air. He jumps about 1 foot - 1.5 foot vertically in the air. He does it when he's excited etc, or when waiting for food (though we have managed to get him to remain sitting now whilst we get his food) - currently we take him on two 20 minute walks per day and he also get free time out in the garden. He has also taken to 'hurdling' our other dog, I would like advice on how to get him to stop this too. Our other dog is 23" at the shoulder so he should not be jumping over them! He is only 16" at the shoulder and at such a young age I'm worried about his hips. We tell him no when we see him doing it but if they are outside and we pop inside then he does it again. We have taught him 'off' as he had a habit on jumping up and placing his front paws on the dog gate (about 4 foot tall) which I don't want him doing as again it is bad for his hips (our elder dog does this too if they're very excited but as soon as you tell them 'off' they jump down and wait).
Thank you in advance for your replies.
The only thing that really calms pups down is getting older :-)
Mine is now six months and can leap up and put her front paws on the top of my head which I do disapprove of so I am doing a lot of training to teach her to keep her feet on the floor as in a recall she tries to land on my shoulders and in heelwork tries to put her paws on my head so respect and discipline are what I am really working on at the moment.
5-10 minutes at a time about four times a day just doing heelwork and recalls (all on lead) and sitting beside me doing a "watch" plus a few minutes playing tuggy when we have finished IF she has done well, if she is still in zebedee mode she gets a quick "good girl" with a very brief tug and is left to her own devices to think about it for a while.
Yes, it is repetitive but it is showing results
