Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Chocolate lab going yellow!
- By Guest [gb] Date 03.10.04 18:40 UTC
My 2 year old chocolate lab has started getting yellow through her coat, on her neck and around her bottom, is this because her mum was a yellow lab?? dad was choccie.
She used to be compleately choc, now shes turning yellow in places, please help!

It's quite possible that this colour problem is due to her breeding - yellow/chocolate matings are never recommended because of the pigmentation problems which often arise. It may be something you will have to live with I'm afraid.

As Jeangenie says, it could be a pigmentation problem. On the other hand, if it has only happened over the last few weeks it could just be dead fur due to her moulting.

I have seen choc labs go a bit gingerish in colour when moulting - is she moulting at the moment? If not it is quite possibly pigmentation problems.

Have since coming onto this forum been trying to understand the colour inheritance in the Lab and had come to the conclusion that you should never mate a yellow to a brown if you want good browns in the litter, although I guess it is OK if you are more interested in fixing a good conformation or health trait and the colour is only of second interest. Please discuss, :) and help me understand why anyone would allow such a mating, accepting the fact that there is no shortage of studs in the breed.
