I just read something about a castrated male dog mating a female. I was just wondering if this is a terrible bad thing to happen.

What would you do if you had a castrated male tied to your in-season bitch? Seeing as there is no chance of puppies, would you just let the two of them get on with it and finish by themselves or would you try to seperate them (carefully!) as if he wasn't castrated?

I don't have to worry about this as my bitch is spayed, but I was just wondering what you lot would do in a situation like this. My first instinct would be to just let them finish by themselves.

What would you do?

Would not attempted to end a tie, and do know people who do not mind their younger bitches (practicing). The only problem I can see is that like all mating there is a chance of injury and or infection and if you do see it you should stop it before penetration or assist as you would a normal mating.

I seem to remember that it can cause a phantom pregnancy in a bitch too .....have you heard of that Jackie?

Don't know Mel, as phantoms are a normal and natural thing I think it just happens anyway, did at one time wonder if the presence of another bitch who was in season or in whelp encouraged the occurrence of the production of milk and nursing desire in other bitches but although I tried to see what specialists thought they just said that they thought it was possible if not likely. So it would seem that there has been no real attempt to find out if there is a trigger for the phantom or if some bitches will do it anyway, when you think about it is those who don't have phantoms who are not behaving in a normal canine way, not the other way around.

Never ever try to separate a tie, even if the dog is entire! That can do severe damage to both dog and bitch, and is pointless really - if the dog is entire, then the sperm has already been ejaculated by the time they tie. You can prevent mounting, but once the tie is complete you wait until they separate naturally.

I've had this a few years ago with a neutered dog, and my worry was about any infection he may pass on. but there was no rhyme or reason to my concern, just a sort of gut feeling it might be possible.

Certainly wouldn't ever try to separate them - dreadful thought!! :-(

Ask our old rescue border collie (neut)......

He seems to enjoy it and obviously so did both my floozy bitches!

He tied twice (different seasons) with my TT and also with my Finnish Spitz last year.

In fact after the tie had finished with my TT she screamed and screamed when he went into the kennel and even tried to dig him out!

Her last season she actually climbed out of our bedroom window and onto the roof in a bid to get to him!

The Finnish spitz will be mated this time so at least i know she enjoys it <g>
