Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Saliva stains - how to get rid of?
- By Guest [gb] Date 01.10.04 21:14 UTC
My dog constantly licks at its front leg and as such the leg is now stained red (it should be white) - does anyone know how to remove the staining and prevent him from doing it again? It is a large area (about 12cm long) - I have tried several tear removing products and also bathed the leg in whitening shampoo but nothing seems to work.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Bicarb of soda in solution is the only product I've found that successfully removes saliva stains (before a moult cures it). But it only works if the cause is cured - ie, the licking stops. For that to happen you have to discover the cause of the licking - is it itchy, is it due to stress, is is 'relocated' reaction ....

Wwhen my chanpion bitch had an Eye ulcer at just over a yuear and had to have the third eyelid sewn over, and wear a lampshade she started licking one back poor for comfort.  she would just slobber all over it, in what I suppose is a displacement aqctivity.

This gives her two nice red toes which should be creamy/grey.  Noiw I will squirt antichew stuff on and give it a wash and that keeps it at bay, but not before the damage is done.  She may go montws without doing it, and then if she is broody, coming up for a season (as she is now) or bored on a long journey she will cusk her foot.

I also find that using bicarb is about the best, but it does take sevearl appliocations, and at the same time stopping the licking for it to help.

Trouble is as it is a sporadic thing with her she usually has done it before I can take steps to prevent it :D
