My 7 1/2 month dobe has pretty smelly breath.  I have looked in his mouth and all is okay.  Wondered if it was to do with his food?  He is on beta puppy, mixed with 2 tablespoons of Pedigree Dog tinned food.  He has been on this since we got him - his breeder recommended this, and I must say he looks very healthy and is well on it, so I am reluctant to change.

I used to feed my dogs on tin food & complete in the dim and distant past! IMO, the diet is the cause of bad breath, especially in one so young. If you are reluctant to change diet then you must accustom yourself to living with halitosis, tooth decay, health problems along with inconsistant stools etc. Sorry, but that is just my opinion :) Have you considered changing to another healthier diet for your dogs sake?

The thing is my dog has never had a problem on this food.  It is what his breeder recommended to us.  He seems to be fine, he seems to be really healthy.  Also his stools are never inconsistent - they are always pretty solid - he really doesn't seem to suffer with loose stools.  The only thing is his breath.  What suggestions of food do you have.  Years ago we had a dobe and I fed him on Fresh chicken with Rice, also tripe.  I did think about James Wellbeloved or Eukabana (I think that's how its spelt!).

Could be your dog has eaten something better not thought about but in general smelly breath means that something is not right somewhere between the way in and the way out :) If your dog has skin folds around the mouth it could be that, or a mouth ulcer, or a throat infection and so on down the system. So it may be best to check with the vet and may be change the food as although you think the dog's breath smells it could just be the sort of smell given off by the food being fed and therefore perfectly healthy.

Can't suggest what you should feed as different dogs systems will react in different ways with different foods also what seems a bad smell to you may seem normal to someone else.
