Whats happening with all the flattie pups!!?? seems to be a nationwide shortage!!

I was also wondering if anyone knew the % of flatties to get cancer, and the average age?

Have you tried contacting Shirley Johnson of the Flatcoated Retriever Society? I do know where there are a couple of litters but am sure they'll also be on Shirleys books too. Most flatcoat breeders make sure there is a waiting list before breeding their bitches, so we hope that each puppy has a nice home waiting, with somebody we have built up a friendship with first. If you look on the internet you can find the flatcoated retriever society and get Mrs Johnsons details.
As to the cancer topic, well this is something we get asked frequently. Even Vets believe the myth, our breed has a higher incidence than others. What is really happening is we do a lot of research into cancer and always record as much as we can about this, hence the myth that flatcoats are more affected than other breeds has built up. I have had flatcoats for over 23 years and can say I have not lost one yet to cancer! I might just be lucky I don't know, but I have had all but two make it into double figures for longevity. The unfortunate two died because of accidents. The youngest one of mine has died is 11.5 years, the oldest 16.75 years. I'm not saying they don't get cancer but it is no more or less than many other breeds.

the semiar i went on up to 50% will get bergin or milant cancer, avage age is 8 1/2 year, some will have a shorter life  and some will live to 12 plus, how long a bit of string,

once you have had a fcr you will not be with out 1,beacuse of their temperment and charcteriset of the breed, will put a side the cancer issue,

if the dog get cancer it is very upsetting,i have lost 4 dogs to the big c of the last 15 years,3 were fcr and 1 was a 5 year old gordon setter so other breed have their problems too.
