My sister's two year old mini schnauzer has started to stare at the ceiling and she says that he is doing this more and more often. Anyone any ideas?

Maybe he is looking for flies/moths ?
Hi scattergood I have a dog who does the same, she can be fast asleep and wake up and stare at the ceiling, she even does this during the night, not sure just what she is looking at as she never barks maybe they can just see things we cant
regards polly_45
Is there anyone upstairs when she does this? Maybe she can just hear something.

I can't believe no one here has suggested, tentatively or otherwise, a 'focal seizure'
Definitely worth looking into
>I can't believe no one here has suggested, tentatively or otherwise, a 'focal seizure'
Cos ive never heard of it - feel free to explain :)
It's a partial epileptic seizure I believe, also called a focal seizure :)
It's like an electrical storm in a part of the brain as opposed to all of the brain which would (i am fairly certain) be a generalised seizure, and which is probably more noticeable/recognisable.
A focal seizure alters a dog's awareness and he may show strange or unusual behaviour such as aggression, extreme fear and so on. Hope toomanydogs can add more as that's all i can remember.

So does my lab. Sometimes she spots a cob web and will stare at it for ages. Sometimes it looks like there is nothing there. Maybe they do have a 6th sense!!

My Cairn looks like she does this sometimes, and it's a fairly recent thing. What I actually think she is doing is "air scenting" - if a dog is trying to get a whiff of something (fox outside , for example) they raise their heads up - nose pointing into the air - and it looks like they are staring at the ceiling.
