Hi! My 3 year old girl GSP has recently developed the habit of barking loudly whilst circling around me. The situation is usually when we go on a beach or some uninteresting field (always wide open spaces) or when I stop to talk to someone. She starts barking wildly (attention- seeking?) Usually the solution is giving her the ball on the rope/but sometimes I forget to carry it with me. I would like to be in control of this situation & try to make her stop barking on command/ but how do you do it? Your thoughts on this please????

Try reversing the psychology and teach her to speak on command. :)

Just taught my dally to do that today. Of course I had to stand and bark so she realised what I wanted her to do.
She'll do anything for Burns sand eels.

you could try taking some treats and when she starts, say "quiet!" (or whatever you want) and when she stops to look at the treat you are holding in frnot of her face, praise her and feed her.  it might take a few tries though!  also, I would stop giving her the rope ball - it's just a reward for barking in her mind, it sounds like that's why she's doing it - she barks to get that ball.  Every time she gets it it reinforces the behaviour - oh, and if you leave it for ages and one day give in, it'll take way longer than it would have done to stop the barking.

teaching her to bark on command will help as well, definitely, because then you can work it at home too - get her barking, then you can teach her to stop barking on command!

Beach - wide open field - how about doing some training such as heel work, stays, sendaways anything to make her use her brain as a mentally and phycially tired dog can be a joy to live with :D :D
