My boy had his removed yesterday. I thought long and hard about it, but he was at the vets so often having them emptied and was always uncomfortable beforehand. Anyway, today, he woke up looking a bit brighter and the little bit of bleeding from yesterday has stopped. However, for the last couple of hours he's been a little bit incontinent and everywhere he sits he's leaving a little mess. He's quite distressed about it, even though I'm following him around with nothing but cuddles, kind words (and a cloth !). His bottom is quite messy and, as suggested by the vet, I've just given him a gentle clean with a salt water solution. As soon as I'd finished though we were back to square one and he's very distressed. Just wondered if anybody else had the same problem with their dog. I know it's not uncommon and I wasn't too suprised, I guess he's not one of the lucky ones. The vet said the op went really well though.
Ideas to make him more comfortable please, or to help his stools harden a bit ?.

Guess nobody around who can advise. Vet has given me something to help his diarrhoea, just wish it would start to work. Poor thing is really distressed, very messy, and I'm stuggling to keep on top of things. Worried that I might make him sore if I wash the area too often but I can see no alternative.
Anybody had similar trouble ?.

Sorry arched, No advice.
Just wanted to let you know CD has been quiet today so hoppefully someone will be along soon :(
And hope he improves soon.
Lea

Sorry I can't be of any help other than to advice not to feed him for 24 hours & give boiled water with electrolyte in it if you have any or glucose with a very small(I do man a pinch)salt to keep him hydrated.
Then Fish/chicken with boiled white rice the next day.

No advice either, but my sister is seriously thinking about having the operation for her dobe so we know how difficult things must have been before the op. I hope he is feeling better soon. Is there an emergency number you could phone for some advice? Might be worth doing, at the very least they can reassure you that all is still well.
Best wishes

Try giving him real raw bones to harden his stools, if thats what you want to do.
A friends dog had a similar problem after this op. His bottom was swollen and sore which made him strain. It did improve after a few days and the incontinece stopped after about a week. Has the vet given you painkillers for him. A very digestible diet may reduce the amout of stools he passes. As the anaesthetic effect and pain wears off hopefully he will become happier.

Thank you everybody. Had a very bad night, he didn't sleep at all (neither did I). The vet rang me this morning to see how he is and I've just taken him in. Everything is fine, temp normal etc. He's just got a very swollen bottom basically, made worse by the stress and everything else giving him an upset tummy. He's got a fantastic appetite so he can't be feeling ill, just miserable and uncomfortable. He's going to see the vet again tomorrow but until then it's just a case of keeping his bottom cool and clean.
I'll let you know what happens.
Thank you again.
Hi just to let you know that our dog bonnie went through the same operation a few months ago and we have never looked back. She was incontinent too for the first week or two but she is back to normal now. the only thing she does now that she didnt do before is break wind a lot lol, but thats nothing as to the agony she was in before. Dont worry another week or two and your dog will be ok

I have had two dogs anal glands removed in the past 2 years and my vets got a specialist in to do it both times as there are a lot of nerves that can be damaged around there.
Neither my dog or bitch had any problems afterwards, and never looked back. So glad I had it done.
Hope everything comes right soon.

Things are now on the up (I hope !). Had a bad few days, very little sleep for all of us and lots of tears on my part because I feel so guilty that he's gone through this. Today is the best day so far. An upset tummy has made things much worse than they should have, don't know if was stress or drug related but obviously it affected his recovery and he has been very sore, dirty and miserable. The incontinence has eased up today because his poo is firmer and and he is on tablets to help him relax at night so that we can all get some sleep. He seems very bright today and is enjoying running around the garden. Fingers crossed !.
Thanks.
Val.

My king charles had this op must of been in 1989.
He was fine, I can remember he was not himself after the op, but apart from that he did not seem to suffer much. It stopped him shooting his butt across the carpet after that.
