Can I ask what you would recommend as a wormer to prevent my pregnant bitch passing worms to her unborn puppies. I just hate the idea of pumping in chemicals to her but, dread the thought of worms even more. Thank you.

panacur in powder form can be given daily for the last 14 days of pregnancy.... your vets will be able to better inform you what dose and what day to start on
Sue
I have been and asked the vets and they recommended starting on day 40 and every day there after. The cost using Panacur would have been in the region of £70 for the liquid and £67 for grans needless to say I will shop around and have found a few already cheaper on line ! But just wondered what your opinions are. Thank you.

Margaret where ever are you thinking of getting your wormer from??!! I wormed my bitch at the end of her pregnancy using Panacur every day for several days (sorry can't remember the details but do have it written somewhere) and I got the wormer from vetmedic.com. I bought puppy wormer and adult at the same time and it certainly didn't cost me anything like that, £10 at the most. P&P is free from vetmedic.
You have either been misled over doses or have dogs the size of elephants!
She may well resemble an elephant before long. She is a great dane and is carrying 9 !
Vets said I was to worm her from day 40 onwards at 15ml per day for her body weight and that would work out at approx 3.5 bottles so I would have to buy 4. The cheapest I have found is Discount Pet Med at £12.88 per bottle, forgot to check postage, so taking it as £12.88 per bottle that works out at £51.52 or at £13.50 from canine chemists and would work out at £54. Either one is cheaper than the vets.
Margaret

You can buy bulk amounts from the canine chemist. I paid £40 for 500ml, and for a litre it is even cheaper.
I have wormed the bitch in whelp with panacur for every litter i have bred, from 6 weeks in whelp to a few days post whelping.

My vet quoted the same as Margaret, starting at day 40, then small doses everyday until after delivery, this was with one of my litters last year. This time she has told us to worm mum to be just before mating, then after the pups are born, then worm the pups as normal, which will definitely be cheaper!
I tried this way with my last litter worming the bitch before being mated then the pups from 2 weeks onwards but the pups still had worms (yeuk) so when they were wormed at 2 weeks it was not nice at all. This time I don't want to see any ! Still have nightmares about yet LOL !!

I guess this a good example of things to bear in mind before anyone gets a large breed animal. It may be prudent to make sure that anyone who buys your pups is fully aware of cost implications.
Breeding is a very costly business and NOT a money making one. At least you know that you can now get wormer at the cheapest possible price.

I brought some worming syrup and worming tablets from a pet shop friday and it cost me £5 for both treatments already the tablets for my bitch are working. I know they are only a cheap make but have brought it before and it has done the trick. Why dont you pop into the pet shop and see what they offer you margret.

I bought my Drontal plus off the net, it cost me £14 to worm 5 dogs, so definitely cheaper than the vet!
Thanks everyone. I have found Canine Chemistst to be the cheapest and have ordered a 500ml bottlle at a cost of £35. A lot cheaper to buy the 500ml size rather than 4 x 100ml and I will also have some left over to worm the puppies too. Just go to show nowadays it is better to shop around and where would we be without the internet !
Margaret

Which wormer are you using? Panacur you use a different strength wormer for pups than you do adults so you won't be able to use the same on both mum and pups

That isn't the cae, the wprmer soes come in two strengths the weaker one makes doeing cats and very small pups easier, but it is just a case of correct dosage

One is 10% and is the same as panacur sold for cattle. If you have a lot of big dogs buying by the litre / 5 litres from a farm supplier is much cheaper than buying it labelled for dogs. The other is 2.5% which is the same as the stuff sold for sheep.

I asked my vet about the D 40 onward panacur regime before my last litter and he advised me not to bother. He said that while panacur is passed as safe at that stage of pregnancy he prefers not to give any drugs to pregnant bitches unless there is a pressing reason. He also said that in his view it isn't necessary where the bitch has been regularly wormed from puppyhood. I worm puppies more often than recommended from 2 weeks up to six months and it's a long time since I've seen a wormy litter. That may just be good luck, but I hope that after generations of very careful wormed pups, my bitches now have few encysted worms to be activated by pregnancy.

My vet would agree with this view.
