Topic Dog Boards / Health / dogs have been poisoned.. but what with? (locked)
- By doglvr [gb] Date 24.09.04 15:07 UTC
On Tuesday evening I let 2 of my puppies (11 months and 5 months) run around and play for an hour at approx 6 pm... when they were quiet I went to see what they were up to. Both were at opposite sides of the garden with thier heads down.... I thought they may have been guilty of something. I looked around and they ahd gotten into nothing. I put them back in their kennels with their kennel mates (they live apart these two pups in particular, but play together) I monitored them through the evening and they seemed to deterioate slowly. Starting with frothy white vomit, then changing to a bright yellow with blood, then diarreah...
I know my neighbours are not pleased with my dogs (complaints have been made, but all have been unfounded by various depts, most recently 2 weeks ago, a visit from the rspca) Myself and the vets have come to the conclusion that these puppies have been poisoned with something. What we have no idea, we know it is not rat poison or anti-freeze, but what else could it be?
Both are in the vets, one is in critical condition and we are unsure if he will make it through the next day or two.. my baby girl(5 month old) is on drip but cannot keep any water down by mouth without vomitting. She too has slight diarreah but seems to be pulling through.... Sadly the one who is doing the most poorly is my top show puppy (not sure if that has anything to do with it) I am at a loss.. if anyone has any experiences or suggestions I would be happy to hear.

Could it be slug pellets as they were in the garden?
- By Stacey [gb] Date 24.09.04 15:41 UTC
Sue,

I'm so sorry to hear about your puppies.  This is the season for toad stools and mushrooms. Adults tend to leave them alone, but puppies may not and many are very poisoness.

Another possibility is anti freeze :(
- By tohme Date 24.09.04 15:49 UTC
I think that has already been discounted; what about plants such as deadly nightshade etc?  Could be anything really...........

Fingers crossed.

I've just cut down my honeysuckle as pup was found eating the red berries that I believe are poisonous.  What sort of plants do you have in the garden?
- By Lea Date 24.09.04 18:25 UTC
Was just about to suggest Berries. The majority of plants are poisonous. And this year, the weather has been great for Berries. The plants are laden with them, so is there any chance they could do that??????
(although, I keep my dogs inside at the moment as am terrified my neighbour/her workers may do something when I am not there)
Lea :)

Hi could it possibly be jays fluid that is very toxic to animals, just a thought I sincerely hope your two pupps will pull through, regards polly_45
- By doglvr [gb] Date 24.09.04 20:29 UTC
Thank you everyone.. I do not use jays fluid.. I use a "pet safe"  cleaner, and I also have other dogs who are sound as a pound at the moment and not affected.
My entire back part where the dogs are is block paved with only a row of conifers... and a small amount of soil... nothing is ever sprayed there... slug pellets I never use due to the toxcity to animals...  no mushroom anywhere they were playing. Everything they can get into is locked in a shed... no food changes to their diet, nothing out of the ordinary... Thinkinging maybe somone threw some bad meat ove rthe fence.. vets are doing a culture on the stool to see if there is bacteria ie salmonella or something similiar.
Thanks for all your help..

UPDATE: My youngest puppy seems to be doing okay, although not able to keep anything down by mouth, she was coming to me for fuss and wagging her tail.. my other male stil is vomitting and dirreah, although they say not as bad.. he did lift his head today once.... maybe a small sign of improvement... but better than nothing. After seeing him last night I thought he would not see today.
I just hope my babies come home soon :-)

Thanks again for all your suggestions.. I am hoping someone out there has maybe seen this sort of thing before or can maybe come up with somthing we may not have thought of.

xx Sue

What conifers do you have growing there?  Do you know the species and variety?  some conifers are poisonous and others can just make a pup ill if they chew/eat them.
mushrooms/toadstools can grow in a small amount of soil and often grow near conifers.

Hope you get to the bottom of this and the pups continue to improve.

I've used Jeyes for cleaning out the kennels/dog run and chicken coop fro the last 20 yearsand all my animals have been fine - you do have to dilute it down correctly though

Jeyes fluid affects Felines - I remember that from an episode of Zoo Vet....

Just a heads up for anyone with cats-any disinfectant that goes white or changes colour when water is added is fatal for cats as they absorb it through their paws & yes that includes dettol

A friend of mine lost two of her dogs due to poisoning, somebody had purposely put down poisoned meat on a well known dog walk, sadly both dogs died, there was nothing the vet could do for either as she took them too late :-(

It sounds like your babies are fighting it, I hope they are back home with you soon fit and well.

You don't have any toads in the garden do you..................?
- By doglvr [gb] Date 25.09.04 15:44 UTC
Do not know if i have any toads.. have not seen any, do not have any ponds near or any water ... but I guess it could very well be...
Anyway my baby girl came home about 10 minutes ago... she is doing well.. off her drip this morning and had some water and a bit of food... hasn't vomitted so they released her.. my boy, we do not know when he will come home.. he is looking better but still not out of the woods yet.
Will keep you updated.

i know someone whos dog was poisoned,by rat or mouse poison.
they also had problems relating to the dog off her neighbours.
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 25.09.04 18:24 UTC
Tohme, just out of curiosity, why do you ask about toads?  I went to investigate barking from my dogs kennel the other day to find a huge (much bigger than a mans large fist) sat firmly on the floor surrounded by three curious spaniels.  I managed to shoo him away but have seen him in the garden since.  I don't think the dogs 'touched' him but did wonder if he/she would cause a problem.
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 25.09.04 18:45 UTC
I believe toads can cause a kind of poisoning, similar to how you describe, so it is possible that your pups my have come into contact with the toad.
- By Jackie M [gb] Date 26.09.04 09:29 UTC
Hope that your puppies will be o.k.     I aways put my girls when puppies in a confined space in the garden, if on their own, because pups will pick up anything and everything and not wanting to repeat other posts, there are a lot of things like berries and such around, you just can't be too careful.  I hope that whatever it is that is wasn't a deliberate action by anyone putting poison down, that would be awful.   Let us know how they get on.
