American cocker spaniels seem to be getting more widespread in England.
But are English Cocker Spaniels getting more widespread in America. Or have the yanks not taken to the English cocker spaniels?????
(One of the useless things you thjink about and need to know the answer!!!!!!!!)

According to the AKC website, the English Cocker Spaniel was ranked 75th last year for the number of dogs registered- 1255 compared with 1248 in 2002.  This is behind the American Cocker which is in 14th place with 19,036 dogs registered last year.  Interestingly, the English Springer Spaniel is ranked 28th for last year.  And in 151st place is the English Foxhound with just 19 registrations!  Anyone who wants to see the entire list can find it here. :)

Hope that is of some help to answering your question Lea?! :)

Well, that is good news for the English Cocker in the US! Generally as soon as a breed becomes popular (in the UK as well) the puppy farmers and other money-makers jump on the bandwagon and breed problems are magnified. So if you love your breed, keep it low-profile!

Not too dissimilar from the proportions over here then but in reverse!    However, by and large the English cocker in the US is very different from the Uk one.  And the Springres are almost a whole different breed, gorgeous, but very unlike the one over here.  Looking at last years Spaniel Show catalogue in Philadelphia, there were over 1000 American cocker entries, and about 140 English Cocker entries!

Hi Lea,

I think the average american person woudl be surprised ot know there is actually a breed called the English cocker - to them, the "Cocker Spaniel" IS the american!

On the show scene, the English Springers are fabulous looking dogs, but way taller than our springers, very elegant, and with the "extreme" grooming which typifies American Show dogs.  The English cockers are, by and large, much bigger too (although I saw some very nice English cockers over there this year, almost all imports from over here). And the different presentation makes a big change - particualry the clipped heads.

From the pictures I have seen the English Springers in the US look more like Setters - I think one won at Westminster a few years ago and I was convinced it was a strange coloured setter until I read the write up

Yes, one did - I think you may have seen the Sallilyn big winning springer.  They are very iimpressvie in the ring, and almost as big as some of our setters!  Likewise, some of the English cockers ae slmost as big as our springers!  On one of my first trips to a US show I saw what appeared to be a lemon Springer on the grooming table - it was a very pale gold (very tall :) ) English Cocker!
