Topic Dog Boards / Health / Ava had a lump
- By Mair [gb] Date 19.09.04 16:26 UTC
:( We noticed a lump on the back of Avas neck and took her straight to the vet, who kept her in for surgery to remove it.  It was expected that either her microchip gone wrong or that she'd got a skin tumour (hearing this, we hoped the problem would be the microchip).  When the lump was removed, there was no microchip in it, so it was sent away to be examined......thankfully, it wasn't cancer either.  The vet said it's either due to the antibiotic injections she'd had recently (for an anal gland infection), or that it was caused by an impact injury (my dogs play quite rough with each other), has anyone had anything similar with their dog?

The worse thing is that on Thursday evening we noticed that Avas wound appeared to be swollen as if it was full of fluid, so on Friday morning we took her back to the vet, who kept her in again, this time she's had to have two drains put in either side of her wound....and it's really horrible because it looks all open and I'm worried about it getting even more infected....can anyone offer any advice about making sure it heals ok?  I've been cleaning the area around the wound with antiseptic wipes (not right up to it though). Fortunately, because it's at the back of her neck, she can't mess with it herself.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Your vet is the best person to ask for advice, but when any of my dogs have had wounds (bites etc) that need to be kept open to drain and heal from the inside first, I was told to bathe it with salt water - a tablespoon in a pint of water.

you could add a drop of t tree oil to your salt water but do let the wound heal from the inside out to stop any infecti being trapped
