My sister is due to have her baby any day now, and they will be spending lots of ime at my parents house.  Our dogs have never met a baby before, and I am unsure about how they will react (especially as 2 of them are getting on a bit!) and what is the best way to go around introducing them.  Obviously I know never to leave them alone together, but apart from that I must admit I'm pretty clueless!
My sister also has a 1 year old dobie who will obviously be living with the baby full time.  Advice please! :)

Is it possible to bring home some clothing that the baby has worn in hospital?  Let the dogs sniff this......

Your sister might find this book handy:  Your Dog and Your Baby: A Practical Guide by Silvia Hartmann-Kent - available from Amazon :)

HTH - best of luck!

My youngest daughter was brought home from hospital and put into her pram so that I could say hello to the dogs first. Baby cried, hubby went to pick her up ..............and was attacked by one of the dogs! I had to grab the dog before she made contact. ;) (why did I do that? :) )Hubby was all set to punish her, but I wouldn't let him. After all, the dog was protecting the baby :D You just won't know how the dogs will react until baby comes home. All I can suggest is to be very careful. You will know the dogs best, or at least your parents will, so they will be able to watch the body language.

By the way, my daughter learned to walk using the dog as a climbing frame :D

When i brought my babies home from hospital I sat them in the baby rocker on the floor and and let our little dog sniff them, I was watching the dog whilst stroking him and talking to him, he then laid down beside the chair, as long as they are not shouted at they should not feel threatened, my mums  dog used to lay under the pram whenever i visited and even barked when the babies started to cry as i am deaf in one ear and he was letting me know they needed me. Dogs can be very protective of babies but they also need to be supervised around them, dont be too protective of the baby and dont treat the dog any differently.
