How long would you leave a limp before seeing the vet ?
Only asking as Libby had a very slight limp yesterday morning- couldnt see any cuts, grazes or anything in the pad.
Late last night and this morning shes limping badly- she lets me touch it all over with no problems- still cant see anything in the pads so wondeing whether shes strained it when running around like a lunatic. Would you take her straight away or see how it goes ?

Unless it gets to the stage that she is crying in pain when not moving around, I would think it could wait until tomorrow - you've already checked it for open wounds/bites and breaks, so I would try & restrict her activity (back to the crate ;) ) and take her to see the vet tomorrow.

Thanks Margot-
Shes not crying or anything even when you touch it and I have tried to move the leg and she lets me but she looks really sorry for herself :(
If it was broken or fractured Im assuming shed be on pain and wouldnt let me touch it ??
I just worry too much

Hi Lel

It will depend on the dog as to whether they will let you touch it, Rio, my male Dobe was quite happy for me to examine him, enough so that I managed to pinpoint the problem to the exact bone when he broke his leg last year - he was still moving around on it but squeaking.

I know another male however who will attempt to bite if he is hurt and you try to examine him (or come within a foot or so of the painful bit)

It depends on the dog - I would keep her on crate rest and lead only to go out to the loo.  If she is still bad when you go to bed tonight don't leave any water down after midnight and don't feed her tomorrow morning in case she is still bad then and needs to be knocked out for an x-ray or anything.

Hope she feels better soon

Hi Lel, when Rio had a limp, which I put down to her just running mad with the other two, because I could see nothing wrong with it. I was advised to make her rest it, I didn't take her out for a few days, I didn't let her run mad around the house and garden, I also caged her for periods throughout the day, It seemed quite hard on her, but it worked. So I'd definitely suggest as much rest as possible, it won't hurt her for a few days. Not sure what it will do to you though, I found it hard.

Mitch.

Hi Lel

How's Libby today?
- By lel [gb] Date 13.09.04 16:02 UTC
Hi Christine
shes still limping- the vets appointment isnt til five past 6.
She does tend to run about a lot with Gus and playfighting etc so thats probably the likeliest cause (I think)
Will let you know what the vet says  and thanks for asking :)

Just to update-
Vet thinks shes strained the joint where her toe meets her foot - doesnt think its fractured as he'd expect swelling etc
thats what happens with a crazy bionic pup on a laminate floor :(
I have to keep her rested ( as if!!)  but can take her on short walks still

Glad it doesn't seem too serious, lel. You're going to have your work cut out keeping her from overdoing it though. Good luck!

<<<You're going to have your work cut out keeping her from overdoing it though>>>
thats an understatement- :)

I must add that having always been in favour of laminate flooring I am now starting to rethink  :(

After Obi had his ED op he had to spend a lot of time in his crate, we gave him a lot of bones, filled kongs etc, then as he improved (he couldn't walk at all at first) I attached his lead to my belt as he is a velcro dog and hated being away from me if I was in the house, this seeme to keep us both happy - at least until I went upstairs!! :)

My mother's just had to have carpet tiles put down in her kitchen (previously the only smooth floor in the house) because when her elderly dog lay down in there he couldn't get up again. :( And with Mother's mobility problems she couldn't help him (he's a golden) and she had to call a neighbour to help. Slippery floors have definite failings.
