You may have already heard that a rabid puppy was imported into France from Morocco and travelled around a lot - the World Health Organisation have issued this release

Rabies in France, Health authorities in France have notified WHO of a recent case of rabies in a dog

I am now being told that all dog shows in France have been cancelled :-(

This was sent to me today from a friend who had seen it on another chat site.

"...
I feel so distressed that
I though I could share the horror that goes on here with you,
dog loving people. I had never thought we could live through
this.

On the 28th of August, a case of rabies has been diagnosed
on the body of a puppy illegally imported in France from
Morroco since July 11th, and dead on August the 21st

Rabies was totally eradicated from France, and vaccination
was not compulsory since 2000. We were all feeling so
idiotically safe.

Within  150 miles around the place where the dog was, any
carnivore, including off-leash dogs, is put to sleep unless the
owner can justify of a valid inoculation against rabies, ie less
than one year, and done prior to June. No need to say the
number of dogs that had not been vaccinated, and of helpless
owners only allowed a last cuddle their companions.
That's the price to pay to avoid a disaster.

All human beings and dogs who had a direct contact with
this pup (the pup, though contaminated and contaminating,
was cute and friendly during the first weeks) are actively
searched for, but all of them have not yet been identified.
This was a holiday time, and the ill dog was taken to lots
of outdoors music festivals, and highly touristic spots.

Yes, that was reported in my paper too. All off-lead dogs, not in their own garden, have been rounded up and, if their owners can't show up-to-date vaccination records the dog is destroyed. No appeal. :(

This is one of the reasons I have mine vaccinated against Rabies.  With the tunnel and more relaxed movment of dogs between countries I want mine protected in case it ever arrives here.
