Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Separating pup and bitch in season
- By Guest [gb] Date 07.09.04 11:45 UTC
Hi,

I have a 4 month old male pup and a bitch who has just come into season. Should I separate the two of them (I have facilities to do so - I ensured this before getting a male pup so that in future they can be separated as I do not wish to breed from them), or is the male too young at the moment to be able to mate? If it had been a month or two later, then I would definitely have kept them separate but due to his young age I am hesitating on whether or not to separate them now. The bitch has literally just started bleeding (in the last two days, so at day 12 -14 my male pup will be just over 4 months old (he's not quite four months yet).

I'd value your opinions on this matter.

I would separate them now for safety sake, he may not be able to get her in whelp but he could physically mate her

better to be safe that sorry

I don't know what you're bitch is like but my girl gets quite hormonal when she's in season, I also have a four month old male pup and my bitch kept sticking her rear end in his face and trying to hump him, almost squashing him in the process, and she was desperate! She was also less tolerant of his attempts to play with her and actually bit him once. I had to seperate them because of her tarty behviour and will continue to do so!
