We have finally got MB,s hip scores back and I must admit was quite taken aback on how bad she has scored. 43:37.

She is however holding her own and is living an active life with no obvious signs of pain and is a happy and vivacious Lab !

Keep our fingers crossed she continues that way ! :)

Hi Lucy

Sorry to hear MBs scores are so high, Megan my labs scores were 44/52 and she is now 3 1/2 and leaves a full active life, and is in no pain, the swimming has helped a lot (at 7 months she could'nt walk more than a few steps).   Everytime the vet sees her he is amazed by how active she is.

Hope MB continues to be active.

Hi Lucy
Sorry to hear about MB.  My lab has also been diagnosed with HD although I have not had him hip scored yet.
Hope she carries on pain free and full of life!
best wishes
Jenny

hi lucy sorry to hear about your dog,my flynn has a high score of 21-21=42,he goes swimming every week & is as fit as a fiddle, goes on long walks etc etc.

just out of interest do you have laminate flooring?
- By katyb [gb] Date 08.09.04 18:27 UTC
why do you ask about laminate flooring as i have laminate floor throughout my downstairs and have a 4 month old lab?

There's a theory that dogs kept on slippery floors (polished tiles or laminate) are getting worse hip scores than those on kept on rough or grippy surfaces (concrete or carpet).

Hi JG

Not a theory I could subscribe to as I have timber flooring and tiles and scores of 3:3, 0:4, 2:2, 0:1 with my current dogs although they also have free access (weather permitting) to get outside.  My dogs don't have very hairy feet though although they do slide around if they go too fast.

Isn't laminate more slippy than normal wood and tiles?

We are the same and MB's bad hips come from the fact she was the runt of the litter and so had a bad start in life. We were sort of aware that she may have problems and got her knowing that. We have laminate and tiles and all our other girls have never had a problem. We make sure that they remain calm in the house wher ever possible and let them have access to outside all the time where they are able to have their mad five minutes :) We also have baby gates through the house to stop the possibility of a Silverstone dog racing track being developed :)

If you keep control and be sensible then dogs can live comfortably with laminate and tile flooring :)

Thanks for all your kind words about MB :)

as others have said there are theories that this could make it worse,so i was just interested to what was on the floor.
we have it in one small room, that flynn was in about 20% of the time,so im interested in any ideas on it ,good or bad. if i get another one he wont be in there at all, just in case

Long may she continue an active life, Lucy! My M-i-L's crossbreed had shocking hips (obviously unscored because she was a cross) but lived a normal life for 14 years.
:)
