Hi Sarah, yes you can feed weetabix to dogs, and generally there will be no problems at all. It is most commonly used when weaning a litter to thicken up the milk replacer making it easier for the pups to lap. However some dogs have an intolerance to wheat so it can cause digestive upsets, just as biscuits, bread etc would as well in those dogs. Once the pups' teeth are properly through there is no actual need for them to have soft pappy foods, but many owners like to feed a milk-and-weetabix meal once a day till the pup is about 10 weeks old. There is no logical reason for it - it makes the owner feel happier I think - and it's been done that way with very few ill-effects for decades!

Some people use rice pudding in the same way.  Others like myself just soften and mash up some puppy food to thicken the puppy milk, and others use a proprietary weaning porridge that is milk with ceral that makes up like readybrek for pups.  The advantage of the latter two is that they are balnced in nutrients specifically for puppies.

I do feed wheatabix to puppies with goats milk but prefer to start them off with baby rice and readybreak with goats milk to get their system used to solids before feeding them raw meats etc.

Hi Sarah

Wheat is not a natural part of a dog's diet and many have problems with the various "grains" although others apparently have no problems at all.

Dogs are carnivorous omnivores whilst humans are herbivorous omnivores - just compare the jaws and digestive systems of each and find out  which can digest cellulose (plant structure) .   Then, if you are in the mood and have the time, follow the thought through and do some research - it can be facinating  :-)
